Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Lead the end-to-end data function at 9amHealth, encompassing data engineering, analytics and BI, and data science/ML/AI, directly shaping member outcomes, clinical decision-making, and operational efficiency.
- • Set and communicate the strategic vision, roadmap, and priorities for the data organization, aligning data initiatives with company goals in chronic disease management, AI-assisted care, and business economics.
- • Build, grow, and lead a multi-disciplinary team of data engineers, analytics engineers, analysts, data scientists, and ML engineers across distributed locations including San Diego, Vienna, and remote US teams.
- • Partner with CEO and executive leadership to translate business strategy into data-driven priorities, define core metrics (engagement, retention, clinical outcomes, unit economics), and deliver executive reporting and board-level insights.
- • Collaborate with Product and Engineering leadership to design instrumentation, experiment frameworks, and ML model deployment pipelines, ensuring data quality and causal inference rigor in healthcare contexts.
- • Work closely with Clinical leadership, care coordinators, and coaches to evaluate model performance, measure clinical safety, and ensure ML-driven recommendations enhance — not replace — human care workflows.
- • Oversee data platform development including ingestion, warehousing, modeling, governance, and real-time vs. batch architecture decisions, avoiding over-engineering while ensuring scalability and reliability.
- • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, PHI handling, audit requirements, and data security protocols across all data systems, access controls, and model deployments.
- • Drive adoption of AI-assisted tooling (e.g., Cursor, Claude, v0, Lovable) within the data org, setting standards for responsible use of LLMs and agents in clinical and operational workflows.
- • Make high-stakes tradeoff decisions between platform investment, analytics throughput, and ML/AI bets, balancing speed, ambiguity, and complexity in a regulated healthcare environment.
- • Define ownership, metric trees, and sources of truth in environments with incomplete data or unclear processes, creating structure where none exists to enable organizational clarity.
- • Represent the data function in cross-functional planning, investor updates, and compliance reviews, defending technical and strategic decisions to executives, board members, and operational teams.
- • Coach and develop managers and individual contributors across the data org, leveling up talent in data engineering, analytics, and applied ML, with emphasis on systems thinking and product instincts.
- • Operate in a distributed, remote-first environment with team members across San Diego, Vienna, and remote US locations, establishing rituals, documentation, and alignment practices to maintain cohesion.
- • Influence the member experience by directly shaping data inputs to the member app, internally built EMR, care team tooling, and AI-assisted workflows that impact daily clinical and operational decisions.
- • Balance clinical safety, operational efficiency, business economics, and technical debt while navigating the unique constraints of healthcare data, including privacy, regulatory compliance, and ethical AI use.
- • Contribute to a mission-driven culture focused on improving healthcare accessibility and affordability for individuals managing chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and dyslipidemia.
🎯 Requirements
- • Led a full end-to-end data function (data engineering, analytics, data science/ML) at scale, from early growth through multi-team organization
- • Shipped applied ML or AI into a live product or clinical workflow, not just experimental notebooks
- • Operated in a regulated healthcare or highly compliance-sensitive environment with PHI and HIPAA requirements
- • Built and matured data platforms (ingestion, warehousing, modeling, governance) without over-engineering
- • Hired, coached, and leveled up teams of data engineers, analysts, data scientists, and ML engineers
- • Made decisions with imperfect data and ambiguity, creating clarity and structure where none existed
🏖️ Benefits
- • Health, dental, and vision insurance
- • Flexible PTO and work from home options
- • Professional development budget and support for continuing education
- • Opportunity to make a meaningful impact on chronic disease management and patient outcomes
