📋 Description

• As a Weekend Backend Engineer at Sportygroup B.V., you will play a critical role in maintaining and enhancing the core backend systems that power a global sporting platform used by millions of users daily, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability through weekend coverage and modern cloud-native development practices.
• You will develop and maintain highly scalable microservices using Java 17 and Spring Boot, contributing to systems designed from scratch just three years ago, meaning you’ll work with modern technology stacks without the burden of legacy code, directly impacting user experience for a rapidly growing international audience.
• Your day-to-day responsibilities include working a Friday-to-Tuesday shift pattern (including weekends), developing and optimizing backend services for high-traffic applications, collaborating with product and development teams to translate user stories into technical implementations, participating in peer code reviews to uphold architectural standards, responding to production support incidents for rapid diagnosis and resolution, engaging in all agile ceremonies (planning, grooming, demos, retrospectives), and mentoring junior engineers to foster team growth and knowledge sharing.

• In this role, you will deepen your expertise in cloud-native backend engineering, gain hands-on experience with advanced distributed systems patterns (including sharding, caching, and message queuing), strengthen your leadership through mentoring, and contribute to systems that scale to millions of daily interactions — positioning you as a specialist in high-throughput, resilient backend architectures within the sports tech domain.

🎯 Requirements

• Minimum of 3+ years of professional experience in backend software engineering or a closely related role
• Strong proficiency in Java 17 and Spring Boot/Spring Cloud/Spring Data ecosystems, with preferred experience in iBATIS/MyBatis
• Proven experience designing and maintaining highly scalable, transactional web backends serving millions of users
• Advanced understanding of microservices architecture, including service decomposition, API design, and inter-service communication
• Expertise in containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes, preferably within AWS cloud environments
• Solid experience with relational (MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB) databases, caching (Redis), and messaging systems (RocketMQ or equivalent like RabbitMQ)
• Advanced skills in object-oriented design (OOD), system analysis, and application of non-functional qualities such as resiliency, maintainability, and performance
• Proficiency in modern testing practices, including behavior-driven development (BDD) and automated test automation
• Ability to work independently with excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
• Must be based in Europe or Latin America to support shift alignment and team collaboration
