Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Join Aprio, a nationally ranked CPA and advisory firm with 30+ U.S. offices and 2,100+ team members who speak 60 languages worldwide, for the 2027 Audit & Tax Spring/Summer Internship in the Chicago Metro area (Schaumburg & Chicago, IL). This hybrid program is purpose-built for high-potential accounting majors who want to move beyond busy-work and dive straight into live client engagements that shape the financial futures of small, mid-market, and Fortune-level companies.
- • As a Tax Intern you will prepare federal, state, and local returns for corporations, partnerships, and high-net-worth individuals across industries such as technology, manufacturing, private equity, and real estate. You will run tax projections, research multi-state credits and incentives, build Excel models to quantify tax savings, and sit shoulder-to-shoulder with partners during client calls to explain findings and recommend planning strategies that reduce effective tax rates and improve cash flow.
- • As an Audit Intern you will execute risk-based audit procedures over revenue, inventory, debt, equity, and complex estimates; test internal controls using data-analytics tools; and draft concise work-papers that withstand PCAOB and AICPA peer review. You will interview controllers and CFOs to understand business processes, identify control gaps, and propose efficiency improvements that strengthen financial reporting and reduce compliance costs.
- • Both tracks benefit from Aprio’s diverse client portfolio—one week you could be on-site at a hyper-growth SaaS start-up in River North, the next at a global manufacturer in Elk Grove Village—giving you exposure to different accounting systems (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle), industries, and regulatory environments in a single internship.
- • Beyond technical work, every intern class completes a capstone social-impact project: past teams have built financial-literacy curricula for Chicago Public Schools, created QuickBooks training for refugee-owned businesses, and developed ESG reporting templates for local nonprofits. You will present your project to the firm’s Executive Committee and compete for seed funding to scale your idea.
- • Structured mentorship is central to the experience. You will be paired with a “buddy” (recent graduate), a senior associate coach, and a partner sponsor who meet with you weekly to review goals, debrief engagements, and map a personalized career roadmap. Monthly cohort workshops cover technical hot topics (ASC 842 leasing, 163(j) interest limitation, SOC 1/2 reporting) and professional skills (storytelling with data, executive presence, inclusive leadership).
- • Networking is woven into every week: think rooftop meet-ups at Revival Food Hall, Bulls or Sox games with the audit leadership team, and coffee chats with national practice leaders via Aprio’s virtual “Intern Lounge.” By the end of the program you will have built a personal board of advisors and a peer network that spans the country.
- • Performance is measured through real-time feedback, not end-of-summer exams. You will receive micro-feedback after each deliverable, a mid-internship pulse review, and a final evaluation that can convert directly into a full-time offer for 2028. Historically, 85% of interns who meet expectations receive offers before they return to campus.
- • The internship runs in two cohorts: Spring 2027 (January–April, 20–25 hours/week during semester, 40 hours/week during spring break) and Summer 2027 (June–August, 40 hours/week). You can preference one or both; many students choose Spring to test-drive public accounting while still in school, then return for Summer to deepen relationships and log the 300+ hours required for CPA eligibility.
- • Compensation ranges from $24–$33/hour depending on semester, location, and prior experience. All interns receive the same access to firm resources, training, and social events—no tiered “intern tracks.”
- • You will work in a modern, hybrid environment: three days in-office for collaboration, two days remote for focus work. All interns receive a MacBook, dual monitors, and secure VPN access so you can seamlessly toggle between client sites, the Schaumburg HQ, and your dorm room without missing a beat.
