  • • This role supports the financial and operational health of the university’s medical services by translating complex clinical documentation into standardized codes that enable proper reimbursement and data reporting.
  • • Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing medical records to extract pertinent clinical facts for accurate diagnosis and procedure coding, assigning appropriate CPT and ICD-9/ICD-10 codes based on documentation, and collaborating with physicians to resolve discrepancies and obtain necessary signatures.
  • • The coder acts as a subject matter expert, providing guidance to junior coding staff on medical terminology, coding policies, and regulatory requirements, while also leading efforts to educate physicians on documentation best practices to improve coding accuracy.
  • • Additional duties involve preparing case reports, initiating follow-up actions for billing processes, and performing other assigned tasks to support the coding team’s efficiency and compliance.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Must hold one of the following active coding credentials: Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based (CCS-P) from AHIMA; or Certified Professional Coder (CPC), CPC-Apprentice (CPC-A), CPC-Hospital (CPC-H), or CPC-Hospital Apprentice (CPC-H-A) from AAPC.
  • • Previous coding experience or equivalent knowledge to an associate’s degree in medical coding, billing, or a related health information field is preferred.
  • • Demonstrated knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding systems, including familiarity with orthopedic-specific procedure and diagnosis codes, is required for accurate code assignment.
