- • As a Coder Certified (Remote) specializing in Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, you will play a critical role in ensuring accurate medical billing and comprehensive patient record documentation. Your primary responsibility will be to meticulously review medical record documentation to identify and assign appropriate billing codes for diagnoses and procedures, ensuring compliance with all relevant coding standards and regulations.
- • You will be tasked with coding evaluation and management services to the correct CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes and assigning ICD-9 (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision) codes for diagnoses. This requires a deep understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes, as well as proficiency in the nuances of surgical coding.
- • A key aspect of this role involves proactive communication and collaboration with physicians. You will engage with physicians to clarify documentation, resolve any coding discrepancies, and ensure all unsigned dates of service are properly addressed. This may involve tagging files for follow-up and maintaining clear communication channels to facilitate efficient workflow.
- • You will serve as a lead resource for other coders within the IBC staff, providing guidance and support on medical terminology and policy interpretation. Your expertise will be invaluable in helping colleagues navigate complex coding scenarios and understand regulatory requirements.
- • Furthermore, you will contribute to efforts aimed at increasing physician awareness of documentation requirements. By educating physicians on the importance of complete and accurate documentation, you will help to streamline the coding process and minimize potential billing issues.
- • The role also includes preparing case reports and initiating the follow-up process for the billing cycle. This involves tracking the status of coded cases and ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to facilitate timely and accurate billing.
- • This is a remote position, offering the flexibility to work from home while contributing to a leading academic institution. You will be expected to maintain a high level of productivity and accuracy in your coding tasks, adhering to established performance metrics.
- • The position requires a commitment to continuous learning and professional development to stay abreast of the ever-evolving coding guidelines, regulatory changes, and advancements in medical procedures and diagnoses, particularly within the surgical specialties.
- • You will be an integral part of the revenue cycle management team, directly impacting the financial health of the hospital by ensuring that all services rendered are appropriately captured and billed.
- • Your attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to interpret complex medical information will be paramount to success in this role. You will be expected to work independently, manage your time effectively, and meet deadlines consistently.
- • This role offers a unique opportunity to apply your specialized coding skills in a challenging and rewarding environment, contributing to the high-quality care provided by Washington University in St. Louis.
- • You will be responsible for maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of patient health information in accordance with HIPAA and other privacy regulations.
- • The ability to adapt to new software and coding systems as they are implemented is essential, ensuring a smooth transition and continued operational efficiency.
- • You will contribute to quality assurance initiatives by identifying trends in documentation or coding and providing feedback for process improvement.
- • This position demands a strong ethical compass and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of professional conduct in all aspects of your work.
