Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Own the full commercial contracting lifecycle for Marqeta’s UK & EU customers, banks, network partners and vendors—drafting, red-lining, negotiating and closing complex, high-value agreements that power the next generation of payment experiences across Europe.
  • • Serve as the primary legal point-of-contact for the Revenue, Product and Finance teams in-region, translating business objectives into clear, risk-balanced contract terms while accelerating deal velocity and protecting Marqeta’s strategic interests.
  • • Negotiate multi-jurisdictional, multi-year SaaS, platform, BIN-sponsorship, issuing-processor and data-processing agreements with tier-1 banks, global brands and fast-growing fintechs, ensuring compliance with PSD2, GDPR, UK GDPR, EBA guidelines and card-scheme rules.
  • • Partner with Sales leadership to design deal structures that maximise ARR, minimise churn and unlock new verticals—translating complex regulatory requirements (e.g., strong customer authentication, safeguarding, interchange caps) into commercial advantage.
  • • Build and continuously refine region-specific contract templates, clause libraries and playbooks that cut red-line cycles by 30 %+, empower non-lawyers to self-serve on low-risk terms, and scale the Commercial Legal function as Marqeta’s European footprint grows.
  • • Provide rapid-fire, plain-English counsel on product launches, marketing campaigns, partnership programmes and procurement initiatives—balancing speed-to-market with prudent risk management and always keeping the customer experience front-of-mind.
  • • Lead cross-functional “deal squads” comprising Sales, Solutions, Compliance, Risk, Finance and Tax to surface issues early, remove blockers and close transactions without surprises—running weekly pipeline reviews and executive escalations where required.
  • • Monitor evolving payments regulation (FCA, PRA, ECB, BaFin, ACPR) and card-scheme mandates; distil changes into actionable guidance, update contract language and deliver enablement sessions that keep the business ahead of the curve.
  • • Drive post-signature contract management—tracking obligations, renewals, price uplifts and SLA performance—while feeding real-world data back into template improvements and risk assessments.
  • • Champion a culture of compliance and commercial creativity across the London office and remote workforce, mentoring junior legal talent and contributing to global Legal, Regulatory & Compliance OKRs.
  • • Represent Marqeta externally with regulators, industry bodies and key customers, reinforcing our reputation as the most trusted modern card-issuing platform in Europe.

🎯 Requirements

  • • UK or EU qualified solicitor with 4–8 years’ PQE gained in-house at a fintech, payments company or top-tier law firm; proven experience negotiating payments, SaaS or financial-services agreements governed by English law.
  • • Deep working knowledge of PSD2, GDPR/UK GDPR, E-Money and Payment Services Regulations, card-scheme rules (Visa, Mastercard) and open-banking frameworks.
  • • Demonstrated ability to close complex, cross-border commercial deals autonomously while managing multiple stakeholders and tight timelines.
  • • Exceptional drafting and negotiation skills with a track record of building scalable templates and playbooks that reduce cycle time and empower business teams.
  • • Comfortable operating in a fast-moving, high-growth environment; pragmatic, solutions-oriented mindset with low ego and high collaboration.
  • • Eligibility to work in the UK; willingness to travel occasionally within Europe and to US headquarters.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Remote-first culture with flexible hours and the option to work from our modern London office a few days per week.
  • • Competitive base salary, equity package and annual performance bonus aligned to company and individual OKRs.
  • • ÂŁ1,000 annual learning & development stipend, plus sponsored attendance at leading payments and legal conferences.
  • • 25 days’ holiday plus UK bank holidays, birthday leave and a four-week paid sabbatical after four years’ service.
  • • Private medical, dental and vision cover for you and your family, plus life assurance and income protection.
