Commercial FinOps Lead

📋 Description

• • Own end-to-end vendor relationships for Supabase’s primary cloud and SaaS providers including AWS, GCP, Cloudflare, CloudQuery, and ClickHouse, leading renewals and negotiations in partnership with Finance and Legal.
• • Enforce procurement governance by managing competitive-bid processes for incoming vendor requests and overseeing larger procurements through the managed-procurement partner, ensuring accountability remains with FinOps.
• • Drive the VIA operating model (Visibility, Insights, Actions) to maintain disciplined vendor spend, surface licensing and usage inefficiencies before they become financial surprises, and execute renewals, right-sizing, and tooling consolidation to realize cost savings.
• • Build and own vendor and SaaS cost reporting from the ground up, designing dashboards and reporting systems hands-on using SQL and BI tools, then partnering with data teams to scale them.
• • Establish and maintain the governance layer for vendor spend, including spend policies, approval thresholds, and accountability frameworks to ensure financial discipline across the organization.
• • Coordinate the cloud efficiency program by tracking optimization initiatives from commitment to realized savings, working closely with Engineering teams without assuming ownership of their delivery or technical execution.
• • Maintain clear boundaries between FinOps and procurement: this role owns the analytical, commercial, and efficiency aspects of vendor management—not contract administration, buying, or engineering delivery.
• • Partner with Procurement vendors (e.g., Vertice) to leverage their operational support while retaining oversight, accountability, and strategic direction within FinOps.
• • Serve as the central commercial interface across the company, translating technical cloud and SaaS spend data into actionable financial insights for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• • Define the foundational systems, source of truth, and standards for the commercial function at Supabase, as this is a founding role with no existing framework to inherit.
• • Operate in a fully async, globally distributed environment, communicating clearly and effectively across time zones and functions without relying on synchronous meetings.
• • Continuously identify opportunities to reduce vendor costs through licensing analysis, usage optimization, and consolidation of redundant tools, aligning spend with engineering and business growth.
• • Maintain a strong focus on unit economics, treating vendor relationships as strategic levers to improve profitability and scalability rather than administrative tasks.
• • Collaborate with Engineering, Finance, Legal, and Product teams to align vendor strategy with technical roadmaps and financial goals, ensuring governance does not impede innovation.
• • Build and evolve the commercial function from scratch, shaping its culture, processes, and tools to fit Supabase’s fast-moving, open-source-first, remote-first environment.
