đź“‹ Description
- • The Community Engagement Lead at OpenAI’s Stargate initiative serves as the critical bridge between the company and local communities where AI infrastructure is developed, ensuring that OpenAI’s mission to build safe artificial general intelligence is supported by trust, transparency, and mutual benefit. This role is mission-critical because community acceptance directly impacts the feasibility, timeline, and social license to operate for large-scale data center projects that power the future of AI.
- • Day to day, the Community Engagement Lead will build and maintain authentic relationships with local leaders, community organizations, NGOs, and residents; develop and execute tailored engagement strategies for new and existing Stargate sites; translate community feedback into actionable insights that shape project planning and design; represent OpenAI in public forums, hearings, town halls, and community events; partner with the Environmental Lead to communicate sustainability efforts and environmental stewardship; create proactive communications that highlight community benefits and preempt concerns; monitor sentiment and advise leadership on emerging risks and opportunities; and develop a scalable community engagement playbook to standardize best practices across geographies.
- • The Stargate team operates at the strategic intersection of commercial, technical, operations, and government affairs, working closely with OpenAI’s capital partners to build the world’s most advanced AI infrastructure ecosystem. This team is responsible for end-to-end infrastructure delivery—from site selection and permitting to construction and long-term operations—making community trust not just a nice-to-have, but a foundational element of project success.
- • In this role, the individual will gain deep experience in high-stakes corporate-community relations within the cutting-edge AI infrastructure sector, develop expertise in translating technical projects into community value, influence how a global AI leader approaches responsible development, and build a replicable model for ethical infrastructure engagement that could set industry standards for years to come.
🎯 Requirements
- • 6+ years of experience in community affairs, public engagement, corporate communications, or a closely related field, preferably with large-scale infrastructure or technology projects.
- • Proven ability to engage diverse stakeholders—including residents, local officials, NGOs, and tribal nations—in high-visibility, politically sensitive environments.
- • Strong public speaking, facilitation, and negotiation skills, with experience representing organizations in public hearings and community forums.
- • Demonstrated success in integrating community benefits (such as workforce development, education initiatives, or local infrastructure support) into project planning and execution.
- • Experience collaborating across government, community, and corporate teams to align priorities and drive consensus.
- • Ability to manage sensitive reputational and political issues with discretion, empathy, and strategic foresight.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Opportunity to shape the community engagement strategy for OpenAI’s landmark Stargate AI infrastructure initiative, with direct impact on the responsible deployment of advanced AI.
- • Fully remote work arrangement within the United States, offering flexibility while contributing to a mission-driven, global organization.
- • Access to OpenAI’s comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, retirement plans, wellness programs, and generous time off.
- • Collaboration with world-class scientists, engineers, and operations experts at the forefront of AI innovation.
- • Professional growth in a unique niche at the intersection of infrastructure, public policy, and ethical technology development.
- • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, with support for reasonable accommodations and equitable hiring practices.
