- ⢠The Conservation Social Science Intern will support the Africa Science Director in strengthening the use of social science evidence across the organizationās conservation programs in Africa, combining applied conservation social science support with administrative and coordination assistance to senior science leadership.
- ⢠Day to day, the intern will conduct structured literature reviews on priority conservation topics such as community-based conservation, human-wildlife coexistence, governance and land-use change, social impacts and equity, and incentives and behavior change; identify and synthesize peer-reviewed and grey literature; prepare annotated bibliographies and evidence tables; translate complex findings into accessible summaries; support drafting of background materials for theories of change, donor proposals, and internal guidance; assist with reference management and citation checks; track emerging research themes; and provide administrative support including meeting preparation, document organization, coordination across teams, workshop logistics, task tracking, and drafting internal communications.
- ⢠The team is part of The Nature Conservancyās Science & Conservation Impact Unit, working within a large international conservation NGO focused on protecting lands and waters across complex, multi-country African landscapes, with close collaboration across interdisciplinary teams in ecology, climate science, economics, and human dimensions.
- ⢠The intern can expect to gain practical experience in applied conservation social science within a major international NGO; understand how evidence informs the scienceāpolicyāpractice interface; build skills in research synthesis, science communication, and knowledge management; develop familiarity with conservation challenges across diverse African socio-ecological and governance contexts; and work closely with senior science leadership and interdisciplinary teams.
šÆ Requirements
- ⢠Undergraduate or graduate training (completed or in progress) in a relevant field such as social science, conservation science, development studies, environmental studies, geography, economics, anthropology, or related disciplines.
- ⢠Demonstrated interest in conservation, sustainability, or humanāenvironment interactions.
- ⢠Strong reading, writing, and synthesis skills, with the ability to summarize complex information clearly.
- ⢠Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
- ⢠Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- ⢠Proficiency in standard office software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint or equivalents).
