- • As the Senior Corporate Counsel at ButterflyMX, you will serve as the primary in-house legal resource, reporting directly to the Chief Customer Officer, and play a critical role in enabling the company’s mission to empower people to open and manage doors & gates from a smartphone by providing practical, business-oriented legal support across commercial contracts, compliance, privacy, product development, and corporate governance.
- • You will operate independently in a fast-paced, remote-first environment, owning day-to-day legal execution while scaling the legal function to support ButterflyMX’s growth across 20,000+ multifamily, commercial, gated communities, and student-housing properties worldwide, ensuring legal strategies align with innovation, customer delight, and operational excellence.
- • Day to day, you will draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements including customer contracts, vendor agreements, reseller and partner agreements, and NDAs, ensuring alignment with business goals and protection of company interests.
- • You will partner closely with product, sales, finance, HR, business development, and engineering teams to provide practical legal guidance that supports execution, including advising on intellectual property matters (patents, trademarks, copyrights), product development, AI usage, data practices, and privacy-by-design principles.
- • You will develop and maintain contract templates, playbooks, fallback language, and standard legal processes to improve efficiency and consistency across the organization.
- • You will ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including privacy frameworks (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA), data security, consumer protection, and employment laws, while supporting lobbying efforts at federal and state levels where applicable.
- • You will advise and support the People team on personnel matters, including documentation, investigations, compliance frameworks, employment policies, equity programs, and workplace compliance, coordinating with external counsel as needed.
- • You will manage and coordinate responses to litigation matters and subpoenas, including document preservation, discovery obligations, and evidence management, while identifying, assessing, and helping mitigate legal and business risks across the organization.
- • You will support corporate governance activities, including board materials, corporate filings, entity management, shareholder relations, and internal approvals, and provide guidance in areas requiring specialized counsel such as M&A due diligence and international expansion.
- • You will support improvements to legal operations, including contract workflows and document management, and provide training and guidance to internal stakeholders on legal best practices.
- • You will serve as the primary legal advisor to the executive team and board of directors, and build, manage, and scale the legal department to support company growth and evolving strategic objectives.
- • You will contribute to a culture grounded in ButterflyMX’s core values: delighting customers, taking ownership, being a community of collaborators, speaking up, thinking big and doing small, and being tenacious — all while working in a distributed, primarily remote workforce that values intelligence, passion, collaboration, AI-forward thinking, and down-to-earth integrity.
