  • • Serve as a trusted legal advisor to Cengage Work, the workforce skills and career training business unit, providing practical, risk-based legal guidance aligned with strategic business objectives.
  • • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, operations, finance, and go-to-market teams to integrate legal and regulatory considerations into business decisions and product development cycles.
  • • Advise on federal and state regulatory frameworks impacting workforce education and training, including consumer protection laws, disclosure requirements, education financing models (e.g., tuition assistance, employer-sponsored funding, public workforce funding), and postsecondary education regulations.
  • • Monitor, interpret, and provide guidance on evolving laws and regulations related to workforce development and training programs, such as WIOA and state-specific workforce initiatives, in coordination with Cengage’s government affairs team and external advisors.
  • • Identify, assess, and mitigate legal, regulatory, and operational risks across Cengage Work by partnering with compliance teams and business stakeholders to develop and implement policies and procedures.
  • • Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements including customer contracts, partner arrangements, and institutional agreements supporting Cengage Work’s diverse business models.
  • • Provide clear, actionable legal guidance to support transaction strategy and execution, serving as an escalation point for complex, non-standard contractual matters.
  • • Partner with Legal Operations to design and improve contracting processes, including the development of standardized templates, playbooks, and contractual standards across multiple business models.
  • • Lead select enterprise-wide regulatory and compliance initiatives as assigned, ensuring alignment with corporate legal strategy and risk management frameworks.
  • • Support corporate legal team on acquisition and other strategic transactions related to Cengage Work, including due diligence, contract structuring, and post-closing integration.
  • • Independently develop deep expertise in unfamiliar regulatory and business domains, demonstrating adaptability and initiative in a fast-evolving education technology environment.
  • • Communicate complex legal concepts clearly and effectively to non-legal stakeholders, ensuring business teams can make informed decisions with full awareness of legal implications.
  • • Maintain active awareness of industry trends in workforce skills training, online continuing education, and technology-enabled learning platforms to anticipate regulatory and compliance challenges.

🎯 Requirements

  • • J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership
  • • 4–7 years of relevant legal experience (law firm and/or in-house)
  • • Experience partnering closely with business teams to advise on complex legal issues in support of strategic objectives
  • • Strong analytical, issue-spotting, and problem-solving skills with a practical, business-oriented approach to risk
  • • Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex legal projects cross-functionally with multiple stakeholders
  • • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills
