Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Join VetSource as an interim Data Analyst and use the veterinary industry’s largest normalized data set to power smarter decisions for thousands of clinics, pharmacies, and pet parents. In this 8-month (possibly longer) remote assignment you will turn billions of messy transactional records into clear, actionable insights that directly improve animal health and the businesses that care for them.
- • Partner with product, sales, marketing, operations, and external clinic groups to define success metrics, scope analytic requests, and translate business pain-points into SQL-based data products. You will run discovery workshops with non-technical stakeholders, document requirements in Jira/Confluence, and manage a prioritized backlog of analyses so the highest-impact questions are answered first.
- • Navigate a Snowflake data warehouse containing 3,000+ entities spanning practice-management software feeds, e-commerce orders, prescription fills, loyalty programs, and digital marketing touches. You will map new data sources, profile quality, and write performant SQL that scales across 40-billion-row fact tables without degrading BI freshness SLAs.
- • Build modular dbt models that follow software-engineering best practices: version control in GitHub, peer review via pull requests, automated testing with dbt-expectations, and continuous deployment through GitHub Actions. Every model you ship will include documentation, freshness checks, and data-quality alerts so downstream users trust the numbers.
- • Create intuitive dashboards in Looker and PowerBI that surface KPIs such as refill adherence, revenue per active patient, inventory turn, and lifetime value. You will design dynamic filters, self-service explorers, and pixel-perfect executive summaries that allow veterinarians to spot growth opportunities in under 30 seconds.
- • Prototype predictive metrics—churn risk, next-best-product recommendations, price elasticity—using Python or R, then productionize the winners as dbt + SQL UDFs. You will maintain a clear model registry so data scientists can reproduce and extend your work.
- • Optimize query cost and runtime by clustering keys, materialization strategies, and incremental loads; target <5-second P95 BI response time while keeping Snowflake spend within budget guardrails.
- • Champion data governance: tag PII, apply row-level security, and ensure HIPAA / SOC-2 compliance for every data set you touch. You will partner with the Security team to complete quarterly access reviews and maintain a least-privilege posture.
- • Mentor junior analysts and foster a culture of analytic rigor through lunch-and-learns, code-alongs, and a shared repo of reusable SQL snippets. Your documentation will become the onboarding bible for the next generation of VetSource analysts.
- • Monitor the health of the analytics ecosystem via Metabase admin logs, Looker content usage stats, and dbt run reports; retire stale dashboards, consolidate duplicate Explores, and drive adoption of certified data products.
- • Present findings to the executive committee each month, translating statistical significance into “stories” that influence product roadmap, pricing strategy, and clinic acquisition targets. Expect to field tough questions on cohort definitions, confidence intervals, and causal inference with poise and transparency.
- • Embrace our pet-first mission: volunteer at adoption events, test new client features with your own furry companions, and celebrate “Bring Your Dog to Zoom” Fridays. Your work literally helps pets live longer, healthier lives.
🎯 Requirements
- • 3+ years in an analyst, statistician, or data-science role writing complex SQL daily (includes internships/co-ops)
- • Expert-level SQL in Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, or similar MPP columnar warehouse; can read query plans and optimize joins across billion-row tables
- • Proficiency with a modern BI stack—Looker, Tableau, or PowerBI—including data modeling, LOD calculations, and version-controlled dashboard deployment
- • Demonstrated ability to gather requirements from non-technical stakeholders and translate them into measurable analytic deliverables
- • Nice-to-have: Bachelor’s in Mathematics, Economics, Engineering, CS, Information Management, Statistics, or related quantitative field
- • Nice-to-have: Hands-on experience with dbt for data transformation, testing, and documentation
- • Nice-to-have: Python or R fluency for statistical analysis, forecasting, or machine-learning prototyping
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive hourly contract rate paid bi-weekly; eligibility for conversion to permanent role with salary + equity
- • 100 % remote flexibility within Pacific-time core hours; company-provided MacBook Pro and $500 home-office stipend
- • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life, and pet insurance effective day one (permanent conversion)
- • 401(k) / RRSP with 4 % employer match, immediate vesting (permanent conversion)
- • Flexible PTO, 10 annual holidays, 2 floating holidays, and 1 paid volunteer day to spend at animal shelters
