Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Lead Cohere’s editorial function, owning all long-form content published under the company’s name, including essays, features, profiles, films, photo essays, podcasts, and eventually books.
- • Define and uphold Cohere’s editorial vision, standards, and voice across all formats—ensuring every piece meets a rigorous, magazine-caliber standard before publication.
- • Build and manage a quarterly and weekly publishing calendar across owned media channels (website, newsletter, podcast, etc.), ensuring consistent cadence, budget adherence, and on-time delivery.
- • Commission, brief, edit, and ship original long-form content from a network of staff writers, freelance contributors, photographers, filmmakers, and producers—maintaining high creative quality while scaling output.
- • Own Cohere’s editorial tone and voice at the sentence level, ensuring all published work aligns with the company’s authentic identity without becoming generic brand messaging.
- • Integrate and unify Cohere’s diverse content streams (blog, newsletter, film, photo series, podcast, social excerpts) into a single, coherent publisher identity—not five separate channels.
- • Partner with the Head of Brand Marketing to align editorial slate with broader brand strategy, and with the Design Director to ensure editorial work is matched by compelling visual execution.
- • Collaborate closely with the Social Lead to ensure social channels reflect and elevate the editorial slate, treating them as public-facing extensions of the same publishing voice.
- • Coordinate with Product Marketing and Comms to ensure editorial work enhances product launches and announcements without becoming a reactive calendar of promotions.
- • Develop measurement frameworks focused on depth of engagement: returning readers, podcast retention, time-on-page, share-through rates, syndication, citations, and cultural pickup—not vanity metrics like impressions.
- • Lead and develop an existing editorial team (senior content manager and staff writer), setting a culture of high standards that motivates rather than intimidates.
- • Cultivate and expand a roster of top-tier freelance contributors (writers, photographers, filmmakers) who actively seek to publish with Cohere due to its reputation and editorial rigor.
- • Serve as Cohere’s head of internal storytelling: translating company vision and strategy into compelling narratives for all-hands, kickoffs, strategy memos, and onboarding materials.
- • Partner with the People team to align employer brand messaging with external editorial output, ensuring new hires experience a consistent, authentic narrative of Cohere’s mission and culture.
- • Take ownership of existing owned-media properties: decide what to evolve, retire, or launch next—potentially leading to a print publication or imprint as the work earns the right.
- • Maintain cultural fluency across journalism, design, fashion, music, art, and the internet, bringing broad cultural insight into editorial choices that go beyond technology or AI.
- • Ensure all content reflects a point of view, not a brochure—prioritizing original commentary, criticism, and reporting alongside brand storytelling.
- • Operate within a fast-moving, technically complex environment while preserving editorial rigor and depth—never sacrificing quality for speed.
- • Be the final editorial gatekeeper: every piece under Cohere’s name must pass your standard before shipping.
- • Measure success through reader growth, audience depth, contributor satisfaction, cultural impact, and internal alignment—ensuring the work is not just seen, but remembered and cited.
🎯 Requirements
- • 15+ years in editorial leadership roles with a proven track record of shipping ambitious long-form work at a high standard
- • Demonstrated ability to run a complex publishing operation, including calendar management, budget oversight, freelance contracting, and production discipline
- • Strong editorial chops: ability to edit at both sentence and structural levels, and articulate editorial decisions with clarity and conviction
- • Established network of trusted writers, photographers, filmmakers, and producers
- • Experience leading editorial teams and managing external creative partners
- • Cultural fluency across multiple disciplines (journalism, art, design, fashion, music, internet culture)
🏖️ Benefits
- • 6 weeks of vacation (30 working days!)
- • Full health and dental benefits, including a separate budget for mental health
- • Weekly lunch stipend, in-office lunches & snacks
- • 100% Parental Leave top-up for up to 6 months
- • Personal enrichment benefits for arts and culture, fitness, well-being, quality time, and workspace improvement
- • Remote-flexible work with offices in Toronto, New York, San Francisco, London, and Paris, plus a co-working stipend
