Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • The Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) in Life Sciences at OpenAI plays a critical role in bridging cutting-edge AI research with real-world scientific impact by deploying production-grade models into regulated life sciences environments, ensuring that advanced AI systems are not only technically sound but also compliant, auditable, and operationally viable in high-stakes workflows such as drug discovery, clinical development, and regulatory submissions.
- • This role is pivotal in shaping how frontier AI models are adopted in life sciences, where success is measured not just by model accuracy but by tangible workflow impact, production adoption, and the creation of repeatable, validated deployment patterns that can scale across institutions and inform OpenAI’s broader product and model roadmap.
- • Day-to-day responsibilities include owning end-to-end deployments from initial scoping through production launch, partnering with domain experts in pharma, biotech, and clinical research to translate complex scientific workflows into clear system requirements, defining launch criteria tied to validation evidence and acceptance thresholds, and enforcing operating standards for auditability, traceability, and inspection readiness in regulated environments.
- • The FDE designs and executes rigorous evaluation (eval) frameworks that measure model and system performance against domain-specific scientific benchmarks, uses error analysis and deployment feedback to refine model selection and system architecture, and distills learnings into reusable technical assets such as reference architectures, validation templates, and benchmark harnesses for broader reuse across life sciences clients.
- • Collaboration is central: the role requires close partnership with Business, Research, Platform/Product, Engineering, and Security/GRC teams to ensure deployments inform both customer outcomes and internal product strategy, while communicating technical tradeoffs clearly to diverse audiences ranging from bench scientists to executive stakeholders.
- • The ideal candidate brings systems thinking and engineering judgment to turn deployment challenges — such as compliance constraints, audit findings, or escalations — into improved operating standards, validation artifacts, and repeatable patterns that elevate both customer success and platform maturity.
- • Based in Munich with a hybrid work model (3 days in office/week), this role offers relocation assistance and requires up to 30% travel to customer sites, enabling deep engagement with life sciences organizations across Europe and beyond.
- • At OpenAI, you’ll join a mission-driven organization committed to ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity, working in an inclusive, equitable environment that values diverse perspectives and prioritizes safety, transparency, and responsible AI deployment.
🎯 Requirements
- • 6+ years of software, ML/AI, or deployment engineering experience with customer-facing ownership in biotech, pharma, clinical research, scientific software, or adjacent technical domains.
- • Proven experience as a senior engineer, tech lead, or deployment owner trusted to make technical decisions in ambiguous, high-stakes environments, particularly in regulated life sciences contexts.
- • End-to-end ownership of customer-facing GenAI deployments from scoping through production adoption, including defining scope, translating workflow needs into system requirements, and measuring success via production impact and eval loops.
- • Demonstrated ability to design and implement evaluation frameworks that measure model quality against scientific benchmarks, use error analysis to refine acceptance criteria, and generate validation evidence for regulatory or inspection readiness.
- • Experience delivering AI systems in life sciences workflows such as discovery, clinical development, regulatory writing, submissions, or scientific operations where compliance, auditability, and reviewer expectations directly influenced system design and rollout.
- • Exceptional communication skills to translate technical tradeoffs into clear decisions, operating procedures, and measurable outcomes for scientific, clinical, technical, and executive audiences.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Relocation assistance to support your move to Munich, Germany.
- • Hybrid work model: 3 days in the office per week, balancing collaboration and flexibility.
- • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI deployments with real-world impact in life sciences, shaping how frontier models are used in regulated scientific environments.
- • Access to OpenAI’s mission-driven culture, commitment to safety, equity, and responsible AI development, with support for professional growth and learning.
- • Exposure to cross-functional collaboration with world-class teams in Research, Product, Engineering, and Security/GRC, accelerating your impact and expertise.
- • Health, wellness, and standard employee benefits consistent with OpenAI’s global compensation and equity packages (as per company policy).
