Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • As a Forward Deployed Sustainability Engineer focused on Product Footprints at Watershed Technology, Inc., you will serve as a critical bridge between cutting-edge AI product development and real-world sustainability outcomes for enterprise customers. This role is pivotal in shaping how Watershed’s newest AI-driven solutions deliver measurable decarbonization impact, particularly in scope 3 emissions across complex value chains, by embedding directly with both product teams and strategic clients to co-create, test, and refine solutions that turn sustainability ambition into actionable results.
- • Your day-to-day responsibilities will include: embedding with product and engineering teams and enterprise customers to drive adoption and success of the Product Footprints platform through beta and general availability stages; co-developing AI agent skills, prompts, and workflows that unlock novel use cases and expand how customers integrate sustainability work into Watershed; building AI-assisted scripts and prototypes to solve emerging sustainability challenges and demonstrate tangible value; collaborating closely with account teams and customers by joining calls, embedding in their workflows, running experiments, and establishing trust as a technical partner; closing the feedback loop by synthesizing customer insights on what works, what doesn’t, and what should be built next; and partnering with Customer Organization leaders to document and scale successful use cases, learnings, and playbooks across broader customer-facing teams.
- • You will join a fast-moving, mission-driven incubation team within Watershed that operates at the frontier of AI and sustainability innovation. This small, agile group works shoulder-to-shoulder with product engineers and the company’s most strategic clients — including global enterprises like Airbnb, Carlyle Group, FedEx, Visa, and Dr. Martens — to ensure that Watershed’s platform not only measures environmental impact but drives real decarbonization. The culture emphasizes experimentation, rapid iteration, and deep customer empathy, offering a unique opportunity to influence both product direction and customer success in a high-growth climate tech startup.
- • In this role, you will develop rare hybrid expertise at the intersection of AI product development, enterprise sustainability strategy, and customer partnership. You’ll gain hands-on experience shaping generative AI applications for scope 3 emissions measurement, deepen your fluency in LCA methodologies and supply chain decarbonization, and refine your ability to translate technical capabilities into business value — positioning you as a leader in the emerging field of AI-enabled sustainability transformation.
🎯 Requirements
- • Minimum of 6 years of experience in a technical or customer-facing role, ideally with exposure to both domains, demonstrating ability to navigate ambiguity and drive impact in fast-paced environments.
- • Proven experience building technical prototypes — including scripts, data pipelines, or AI-assisted workflows — with comfort writing prototype-quality code and familiarity with LLMs, agent skills, prompt engineering, or AI tooling.
- • Fluency in data tools such as Excel, SQL, and Python, with demonstrated ability to wrangle messy sustainability data, build lightweight pipelines, and convert raw inputs into actionable outputs for analysis and reporting.
- • Solid understanding of corporate sustainability concepts, including scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, product life cycle assessment (LCA), product footprints, and supply chain decarbonization strategies.
- • Experience working directly with sustainability, technical, or procurement stakeholders at enterprise companies to build trust, solve complex problems, and communicate data-driven insights through compelling storytelling.
- • Willingness to travel onsite to customer locations up to 25% of the time to embed in workflows, run workshops, and strengthen partnerships.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Hybrid work model with expectation of 4 days per week in Watershed’s San Francisco office (or other hub locations), supporting collaboration while offering flexibility.
- • Opportunity to work on mission-critical climate technology with real-world impact, helping Fortune 500 companies measure, report, and reduce their carbon footprint at scale.
- • Access to cutting-edge AI and sustainability tools, including Watershed’s proprietary Product Footprints platform and LLM-powered agent frameworks, enabling skill growth in generative AI for ESG.
- • Professional development through close collaboration with world-class product engineers, sustainability experts, and enterprise customers across industries such as retail, logistics, finance, and manufacturing.
- • Comprehensive health, wellness, and financial benefits package aligned with Watershed’s commitment to employee well-being in a high-growth startup environment.
- • Equity compensation as part of a mission-driven startup, allowing you to share in the long-term success of a company transforming how businesses approach sustainability.
