- • Provide legal support services to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) and supervisory attorneys in U.S. Attorney Offices under the Department of Justice, assisting with criminal and civil litigation, including immigration enforcement cases.
- • Conduct complex legal research on federal, state, and local laws, judicial precedents, agency regulations, and legislative intent to support case development and strategy.
- • Analyze case files to identify applicable statutory and regulatory law, potential defenses, violations, or causes of action, and alert attorneys to legal issues arising during case review.
- • Manage habeas corpus and immigration habeas matters, including docketing filings, calendaring deadlines, locating case files, drafting responses, and ensuring timely court submissions.
- • Draft legal documents such as motions, briefs, memoranda of law, proposed orders for judges and magistrates, and correspondence for attorney signature.
- • Screen documents for attorney-client privilege and other legal protections during discovery and document review processes.
- • Assist attorneys with all phases of litigation, from investigation and discovery through trial and appeal, ensuring procedural compliance with federal and state court rules.
- • Maintain proficiency in federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and standard legal research tools including LEXIS and Westlaw.
- • Utilize eDiscovery tools and possess hands-on knowledge of electronic discovery procedures, including ESI (electronically stored information) management and review platforms.
- • Operate efficiently with computer applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), document management systems, databases, and imaging software.
- • Work under the direction of a Litigation Support Specialist 4 or Project Manager while independently managing assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
- • Adapt quickly to unexpected developments, make responsible decisions under time pressure, and maintain accuracy in high-stakes legal documentation.
- • Maintain physical presence within the commuting radius of the assigned U.S. Attorney’s Office location.
- • Ensure compliance with DOJ MBI clearance requirements, which necessitate U.S. citizenship.
- • Participate in up to 25% local travel as needed for court appearances, meetings, or case-related activities.
- • Pursue tuition reimbursement for Relativity and ACEDS certifications to advance expertise in eDiscovery and legal technology.
🎯 Requirements
- • Law degree or completion of at least two years of study at an ABA-accredited law school
- • Active license from a state bar
- • Valid state driver’s license
- • Minimum two years of professional legal work experience
- • Ability to obtain DOJ MBI clearance (U.S. citizenship required)
- • Proficiency in LEXIS, Westlaw, Microsoft Office, and eDiscovery tools
