  • • Assist the Chief Engineer in the maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel systems onboard ships, including hotel equipment and mechanical systems.
  • • Perform daily inspections and preventive maintenance on engines, generators, pumps, HVAC systems, and auxiliary machinery to ensure safe and efficient vessel operations.
  • • Monitor and record engine room parameters, fuel consumption, lubrication levels, and system performance logs as required by company and regulatory standards.
  • • Respond to equipment failures and emergencies at sea, performing repairs under pressure and with minimal supervision.
  • • Follow all safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures, confined space entry, and hazardous material handling, in compliance with USCG and international maritime regulations.
  • • Support the Chief Engineer in managing spare parts inventory, ordering critical components, and maintaining accurate maintenance records.
  • • Participate in scheduled dry-dock inspections and coordinate with shipyard personnel during vessel overhauls and repairs.
  • • Operate and maintain auxiliary systems such as watermakers, waste treatment units, refrigeration units, and electrical distribution panels.
  • • Ensure all engineering activities comply with National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions environmental sustainability standards.
  • • Communicate effectively with bridge crew and hotel department staff to coordinate system needs and resolve operational issues.
  • • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe engine room environment in accordance with company and maritime safety guidelines.
  • • Adhere to a 12-hour shift schedule, working approximately 6 weeks on and 6 weeks off in a rotational deployment pattern.
  • • Complete all required training, certifications, and drills, including fire fighting, survival craft, and medical response procedures.
  • • Represent Lindblad Expeditions professionally while onboard, upholding the company’s commitment to expeditionary excellence and guest experience.
  • • Support the training and development of junior engineering staff as directed by the Chief Engineer.
  • • Document all repairs, incidents, and maintenance actions in the vessel’s engineering logbook with precision and timeliness.
  • • Work independently in remote locations with limited external support, demonstrating sound judgment and technical proficiency.
  • • Maintain compliance with all applicable international maritime conventions, including MARPOL, SOLAS, and STCW.
  • • Collaborate with the ship’s medical officer to ensure engineering systems support onboard health and safety needs.
  • • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and environmental impact.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with endorsement as Assistant Engineer
  • • Current STCW certification including Basic Safety Training, Advanced Fire Fighting, and Proficiency in Survival Craft
  • • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an Assistant Engineer or equivalent on ocean-going vessels
  • • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience with diesel engines, electrical systems, and hotel equipment
  • • Ability to work 12-hour shifts in a rotational 6 weeks on / 6 weeks off schedule
  • • Valid passport and ability to obtain necessary visas for international travel
