Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Serve as the clinical quarterback for Northwestern Medicine’s nationally ranked Anesthesiology Pre-Operative Medicine team, orchestrating the critical first step in the peri-operative journey for more than 300 patients each week. Your evidence-based assessments directly influence anesthetic plans, surgical scheduling, and patient safety outcomes across a spectrum that ranges from routine ambulatory orthopedics to high-risk cardiac, transplant, and neurosurgical cases.
  • • Conduct comprehensive pre-operative evaluations that include detailed histories, risk-stratified physical examinations, and expert interpretation of advanced diagnostics such as labs, EKGs, chest imaging, pulmonary function tests, echocardiograms, and subspecialty consult notes. Apply contemporary guidelines from ASA, ACC/AHA, CHEST, and ERAS to identify modifiable risk factors, initiate medication optimization, and coordinate multidisciplinary clearances.
  • • Detect and manage red-flag conditions—uncontrolled hypertension, complex anticoagulation regimens, anticipated difficult airways, severe OSA, or brittle diabetes—and formulate individualized optimization pathways. Escalate complex cases to attending anesthesiologists, ensuring every patient reaches the operating room in peak physiologic condition and minimizing costly day-of-surgery cancellations.
  • • Leverage EPIC-based workflows to craft concise yet thorough pre-anesthesia evaluations, problem lists, and validated risk scores (ASA-PS, RCRI, STOP-BANG, DASI). Your documentation becomes the single source of truth for intra-operative and post-operative teams, driving continuity of care and enhancing patient safety across the entire peri-operative continuum.
  • • Act as an educator and mentor to residents, medical students, and rotating advanced practice providers. Lead bedside teaching sessions on evidence-based peri-operative medicine, point-of-care ultrasound techniques, and effective interprofessional communication with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and peri-operative nursing staff.
  • • Drive measurable quality improvement by participating in multidisciplinary initiatives that have already achieved a 22 % reduction in day-of-surgery cancellations and a 15-minute average decrease in pre-op wait times. Contribute data, present findings at monthly M&M conferences, and implement sustainable process changes that elevate the standard of care.
  • • Engage in scholarly activity with protected time for research on pre-operative optimization, ERAS protocols, and novel risk-stratification tools. Present posters at SOAP, ASA, and SEA annual meetings; co-author peer-reviewed publications; and pursue internal grant opportunities that advance the science of peri-operative medicine.
  • • Rotate through our bustling Pre-Op Assessment Clinic, same-day admit units, and innovative tele-preop services. Enjoy a predictable schedule of four 10-hour day shifts (Monday–Friday, 6:30 am–5:00 pm) with no weekends, no call, and built-in flexibility for work-life balance.
  • • Collaborate with a collegial team of 18 Nurse Practitioners, 12 Physician Assistants, 35 anesthesiologists, and peri-operative nurses who champion open communication, mutual respect, and continuous learning. Monthly M&M conferences and quarterly journal clubs foster a culture of safety, innovation, and professional growth.
  • • Complete a structured 90-day onboarding plan featuring EPIC proficiency labs, high-fidelity simulation for airway and line placement, and one-on-one mentorship with senior APPs. Access annual professional development funds for national conferences, certification courses, and advanced degrees.
  • • Immerse yourself in the vibrant city of Chicago—steps from Lake Michigan, world-class dining, and cultural landmarks. Take advantage of discounted parking, secure bike storage, an on-site fitness center, and seamless public-transit access to make your commute effortless.
