  • • As an Ohio Underwriting Counsel (Remote) at First American Financial Corporation, you will provide critical underwriting support and legal expertise to ensure the accurate issuance of real estate title insurance commitments and policies, directly contributing to the company’s mission of empowering policy-issuing agents with trusted guidance and resources.
  • • You will serve as a trusted legal advisor to company personnel, agents, and customers, applying underwriting standards within delegated authority to evaluate risk, authorize title insurance issuance, and support seamless real estate settlement services while upholding the highest standards of compliance and integrity.
  • • Your role is vital to maintaining First American’s reputation as a leader in title insurance, where your counsel helps prevent title defects, facilitates smooth closings, and protects the interests of lenders, buyers, and sellers across Ohio.
  • • Day-to-day, you will provide underwriting support, counsel, and authorization for real estate title insurance commitments and policies, ensuring all decisions align with company underwriting guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • • You will utilize established underwriting standards and guidelines within your delegated authority limits to assess and underwrite title insurance transactions, making sound, timely decisions based on legal analysis and risk assessment.
  • • You will guide company personnel in the performance of real estate settlement services, offering expert interpretation of title issues, liens, encumbrances, and closing requirements to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • • You will develop and issue underwriting standards and guidelines in accordance with First American’s internal processes, helping to standardize practices and improve consistency across the agency division.
  • • You will handle additional duties as assigned, adapting to evolving business needs while maintaining a high level of responsiveness and precision in a fast-paced, remote work environment.
  • • You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including agents, underwriters, claims, and legal departments to resolve complex title issues and provide proactive risk mitigation strategies.
  • • You will maintain meticulous documentation of underwriting decisions, ensuring audit readiness and compliance with internal and external regulatory standards.
  • • You will stay current on evolving Ohio real estate law, title insurance regulations, and federal/state compliance requirements to ensure all underwriting practices remain legally sound and up to date.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Law Degree (J.D.) required.
  • • Admitted to practice law in the state of employment (Ohio) and in good standing.
  • • 5-7 years of proven title underwriting experience, with specific Ohio Title Underwriting experience required.
  • • Strong understanding of real estate law, title insurance principles, settlement processes, and applicable Federal and State regulations.
  • • Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills, with demonstrated ability to collaborate, act decisively, and provide clear, authoritative guidance.
  • • Detail-oriented, highly organized, and adept at multi-tasking, prioritizing, and following up in a timely manner with strong negotiation and creative problem-solving abilities.
