đź“‹ Description
- • Join OpenAI's groundbreaking Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) organization, a dynamic team operating at the critical nexus of product development, cutting-edge research, and market strategy. As a Platform Engineer within FDE, you will be instrumental in translating OpenAI's most advanced platform capabilities into tangible, real-world applications by partnering with design partners and key customers.
- • Your core mission will be to transform raw customer feedback and deployment signals into robust, shippable software, identify and codify repeatable engineering patterns, and contribute to the development of durable, scalable products. This role is designed for highly collaborative software and ML engineers who possess a passion for innovating with state-of-the-art technologies and working alongside other builders to bring ambitious ideas to fruition.
- • The FDE Platform team functions as a critical leverage multiplier for the broader FDE organization, significantly amplifying its impact across OpenAI's diverse platform and product offerings. You will achieve this leverage through hands-on engagement, embedding directly with customer-facing FDE pods. Your contributions will span critical areas such as architectural design, product shaping, code refactoring, system hardening, and the development of reusable abstractions, all while ensuring the FDE pods maintain ownership of customer insights and day-to-day execution.
- • As a Platform Engineer, you will be at the forefront of building new platform capabilities from the ground up, with your work deeply informed and validated by real-world customer deployments. You will forge strong partnerships with customer-tagged FDEs who are actively driving customer outcomes and delivering value. Your role will involve embedding strategically where your expertise can provide the greatest leverage, working directly on architectural challenges, refining product direction, optimizing codebases, enhancing system robustness, and creating essential reusable components.
- • A key aspect of your responsibility will be to collaborate closely with our dedicated B2B Platform Team and other long-term product owners. This collaboration is vital for aligning on strategic decisions regarding what capabilities should be generalized for broader use, what should remain specific to individual customer engagements, and what constitutes a 'ready for handoff' state for platform features.
- • In this role, you will provide essential hands-on leverage to customer pods by embedding with FDE teams. Your contributions will directly support the generalization of successful patterns and solutions, playing a key role in architecture, product shaping, refactoring, and implementation efforts. You will be adept at transforming recurring signals observed across multiple customer engagements into well-defined platform bets. This involves formulating crisp hypotheses, establishing clear success criteria, defining project scope, and developing validation plans that are practical and aligned with real-world account constraints.
- • You will significantly raise the engineering standard across the FDE organization by developing and implementing effective tooling and providing mentorship. This includes setting org-wide quality benchmarks through rigorous, high-signal code reviews and collaborative pairing sessions. Furthermore, you will build lightweight, yet impactful, developer tools designed to promote sound architectural practices, enhance code readability, and ensure correctness by default across all FDE activities.
- • Collaboration will be a cornerstone of your work, as you partner closely with cross-functional teams including B2B Product, customer-tagged FDEs, Operations, and Business Development. Your collective efforts will be focused on bringing the most impactful products and platform capabilities to market effectively.
- • In instances requiring it, you will take the lead in driving complex platform capabilities from inception to completion. For critical, high-leverage primitives such as our Context Platform, you will serve as the Directly Responsible Individual (DRI), managing the entire lifecycle from requirements definition through implementation. You will ensure key trade-offs are made explicit and transparent, and proactively involve customer pods early in the process to maintain grounding in real-world deployment scenarios.
- • This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of AI platforms by grounding engineering efforts in actual customer needs and driving the generalization of successful solutions. You will be a key player in ensuring OpenAI's advanced AI capabilities are not only powerful but also practical, reliable, and widely adopted.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of software engineering or ML engineering experience, with a proven track record of successfully shipping 0→1 capabilities that are depended upon by other engineers or customers.
- • Demonstrated experience owning customer-adjacent technical work end-to-end, from initial scoping and hypothesis setting through to production adoption and iterative improvement.
- • Experience building or operating systems where reliability, security, and governance were critical design considerations (e.g., permissions/RBAC, auditability, data access boundaries, rollout safety, observability, incident-driven hardening).
- • Strong communication skills, capable of clearly articulating complex technical concepts to diverse audiences including engineering, product, go-to-market, and executive teams, and translating technical trade-offs into adoption impact and measurable outcomes.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary and equity compensation.
- • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
- • Generous paid time off and holidays.
- • Relocation assistance for eligible candidates.
- • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI technology with a world-class team.
