- • Serve as a Prescribed Fire Practitioner II within The Nature Conservancy’s North America Fire Program, assisting with prescribed and wildland fire operations across the contiguous United States.
- • Conduct prescribed burns under the supervision of a Prescribed Fire Module Leader and in coordination with TNC and U.S. Forest Service fire management staff.
- • Prepare fire lines, maintain equipment including ATVs, UTVs, tractors, chainsaws, and leaf blowers, and tow trailers as required for fire operations.
- • Monitor and document post-burn fire effects and vegetation responses to support ecological restoration goals.
- • Operate and maintain mobile mapping and data collection tools such as Collector for ArcGIS and Avenza Maps to record burn boundaries and operational data.
- • Perform heavy physical labor in variable weather conditions, on remote and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances consistent with wildland fire standards.
- • Adhere strictly to established safe work practices and TNC’s Code of Conduct during all assignments.
- • Maintain accurate records of work hours, expenses, and operational reports, submitting them in a timely manner.
- • Pursue and maintain professional certifications including Prescribed Fire Crew Member (RXCM) or Firefighter Type Two (FFT2), with required training in I-100, L-180, S-190, S-130, and completion of one supervised training burn.
- • Achieve and maintain physical fitness standards as defined by the local Prescribed Fire Manager and the TNC Fire Management Manual.
- • Build and sustain relationships with local, state, and federal agencies, Tribal and Indigenous communities, non-profits, and local fire departments to support collaborative fire management efforts.
- • Travel to fire assignments for a minimum of eight weeks during a six-month employment term, with flexibility to choose assignment dates and return home between assignments; most assignments are a minimum of two weeks.
- • Operate in a team environment that values diversity, respect, and inclusion across backgrounds, skill sets, and life experiences.
- • Abstain from alcohol and recreational drugs at all times while on assignment to uphold community trust and a healthy work culture.
- • Receive reimbursement for approved purchases of required personal equipment, as well as full coverage of travel, meals, and lodging during assignments.
🎯 Requirements
- • High school diploma or equivalent
- • Must obtain RXCM or FFT2 qualifications, including I-100, L-180, S-190, S-130, and one supervised training burn
- • Must achieve and maintain physical fitness standards per TNC Fire Management Manual
- • Experience operating equipment such as ATVs, UTVs, tractors, chainsaws, and leaf blowers
- • Must be able to obtain required licenses or certifications (e.g., First Aid, CPR)
- • Valid driver’s license and good driving record
