- • Perform prescribed burning and vegetation management tasks under the supervision of a Prescribed Fire Module Leader and in coordination with local TNC and U.S. Forest Service fire management staff.
- • Assist with all aspects of prescribed fire operations, including preparing fire lines, monitoring post-burn fire effects, and conducting controlled burns across diverse terrains in the United States.
- • Operate and maintain specialized equipment such as ATVs, UTVs, tractors, chainsaws, leaf blowers, and tow trailers.
- • Utilize mobile mapping and data collection tools including Collector for ArcGIS and Avenza Maps to document fire operations and track ecological outcomes.
- • Adhere to established safe work practices and TNC’s Code of Conduct while working in remote, hazardous, and variable weather conditions.
- • Maintain accurate records of work hours, expenses, and operational reports, submitting them in a timely manner.
- • Achieve and maintain physical fitness standards as defined by the TNC Fire Management Manual and local Prescribed Fire Manager.
- • Obtain and uphold required certifications including Prescribed Fire Crew Member (RXCM) or Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2), along with I-100, L-180, S-190, S-130, and completion of one supervised training burn.
- • Build and sustain professional relationships with U.S. Forest Service, state and federal agencies, Tribal and Indigenous communities, local fire departments, and non-profit partners.
- • Participate in at least eight weeks of prescribed fire assignments during a six-month employment term, with flexibility to choose assignment dates and return home between assignments; minimum assignment length is typically two weeks.
- • Travel to fire assignments across the contiguous United States, with all travel expenses, meals, and lodging covered during assignments.
- • Avoid use of alcohol and recreational drugs at all times while on assignment to uphold community trust and safety standards.
- • Pursue additional professional certifications such as Fire Effects Monitor (FEMO), Intermediate Faller (FAL2), and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to qualify for higher pay rates.
- • Receive partial or full reimbursement for approved purchases of required personal equipment.
- • Work as a respectful, collaborative member of a diverse team with varied backgrounds, skill sets, and life experiences.
- • Function as a seasonal, part-time, hourly employee with overtime pay applicable after 40 hours per week.
🎯 Requirements
- • High school diploma or equivalent
- • Must obtain RXCM or FFT2 certification, including I-100, L-180, S-190, S-130, and one supervised training burn
- • Must meet physical fitness standards per TNC Fire Management Manual
- • Experience operating ATVs, UTVs, tractors, chainsaws, and other prescribed fire equipment
- • Must be able to obtain required licenses or certifications (e.g., First Aid, CPR)
- • Valid driver’s license and good driving record (desired)
