  • • Serve as a Prescribed Fire Practitioner IV within The Nature Conservancy’s North America Fire program, conducting prescribed burns and vegetation management activities across the United States.
  • • Assist in all phases of prescribed fire operations, including preparing fire lines, operating and maintaining equipment such as ATVs, UTVs, tractors, chainsaws, and leaf blowers, and towing trailers.
  • • Direct and supervise staff and volunteers during fire-related activities in coordination with local Nature Conservancy and U.S. Forest Service Fire Management staff.
  • • Monitor and evaluate post-burn fire effects to support ecological restoration goals and adaptive management practices.
  • • Utilize mobile mapping and data collection tools including Collector for ArcGIS and Avenza Maps to document burn units and operational data.
  • • Perform heavy physical labor in variable weather conditions, on remote and hazardous terrain, under physically demanding circumstances.
  • • Make real-time safety decisions that impact firefighter safety and operational effectiveness during dynamic fire assignments.
  • • Ensure strict adherence to safe work practices and compliance with The Nature Conservancy’s Code of Conduct and Fire Management Manual.
  • • Maintain accurate records of work hours, expenses, and operational reports, submitting them in a timely manner.
  • • Build and sustain professional relationships with federal, state, and local agencies, Tribal and Indigenous communities, non-profits, and fire departments.
  • • Pursue ongoing professional development by obtaining and maintaining fire certifications, including Single Resource Boss (ENGB, FIRB, CRWB) and Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2) qualifications.
  • • Be available for at least eight weeks of prescribed fire assignments during a six-month employment term, with flexibility to choose assignment dates and return home between assignments; minimum assignment length is two weeks.
  • • Travel for assignments is required; all travel expenses, meals, and lodging are covered by The Nature Conservancy.
  • • Approved purchases of required personal equipment may be partially or fully reimbursed.
  • • Prohibit use of alcohol and recreational drugs at all times while on assignment to uphold community trust and safety standards.
  • • Meet and maintain physical fitness standards as defined by the local Fire Manager and The Nature Conservancy Fire Management Manual.
  • • May be required to obtain additional certifications such as CPR and herbicide application, as needed for specific assignments.

🎯 Requirements

  • • High school diploma and 1 year of training in fire operations, science-related field, or related land management experience
  • • Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) with successful completion of FFT1 task book
  • • Two or more seasons of experience as a Senior Burn Crew Member or equivalent agency qualification
  • • Experience supervising staff or volunteers
  • • Must achieve and maintain physical fitness standards per TNC Fire Management Manual
  • • Experience operating and maintaining prescribed fire equipment including ATVs, chainsaws, and trailers
