- • As a Principal Machine Learning Engineer at Upstart, you will lead engineering initiatives that turn high-impact modeling needs into scalable, reusable infrastructure, directly accelerating ML innovation across the company and advancing the mission to make credit more accurate, accessible, and fair for millions of Americans.
- • You will build a unified embeddings platform for training, serving, and managing representations at scale; streamline feature engineering pipelines; develop automated continuous-learning systems; and scale training pipelines to support larger datasets, more complex architectures, and faster experimentation—all while working backward from applied ML projects that improve accuracy.
- • You will join the Machine Learning Platform team, which builds foundational technology that scales ML innovation across Upstart, collaborating closely with Research Scientists, Data Scientists, and ML Platform Engineers in a digital-first environment with flexibility to work remotely or from offices in Columbus, Austin, the Bay Area, or New York City (opening Summer 2026).
- • In this role, you will deepen your expertise in end-to-end ML lifecycle engineering, influence technical strategy across disciplines, and gain experience leading large-scale platform initiatives that multiply the effectiveness of every ML team at Upstart, positioning you as a technical leader in applied ML infrastructure.
🎯 Requirements
- • 7+ years of hands-on experience in applied machine learning with strong exposure to production-scale modeling efforts
- • Demonstrated expertise in end-to-end model development: data preparation, feature engineering, training, evaluation, and deployment
- • Proficiency in Python and core ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, XGBoost)
- • Master’s degree or PhD in a quantitative discipline, or equivalent additional professional experience
- • Ability to work autonomously and lead technical direction in ambiguous, high-impact domains
- • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including ML scientists, engineers, and product partners
