- • As a Product Counsel, Privacy at Clay Labs Inc., you will be at the forefront of safeguarding user data and ensuring our innovative products operate in full compliance with global privacy regulations. This is a pivotal role where your legal expertise will directly shape our product development lifecycle and reinforce our commitment to being a trusted partner for our thousands of customers, including industry leaders like Anthropic, Notion, Google, and Ramp.
- • You will serve as the primary legal advisor for all privacy-related matters, meticulously evaluating our data processing practices, optimizing compliance strategies, and fostering robust relationships with our data partners. This position demands a unique blend of sharp legal acumen, forward-thinking strategic insight, and exceptional collaboration skills, enabling you to work seamlessly with our product, engineering, sales, marketing, and compliance teams.
- • Your core mission will be to ensure that Clay's relentless pursuit of innovation is always harmonized with stringent compliance, paving the way for sustainable and ethical growth. This is a significant new opportunity within Clay, offering ample scope for creativity, professional development, and the chance to make a tangible impact on the company's trajectory and reputation.
- • A key responsibility will be conducting comprehensive privacy risk assessments for all new and existing product features. You will apply and continuously refine best practices for handling both company and personal datasets, providing expert guidance on data transformations, sanitization techniques, and data removal processes. Crucially, you will empower our customers, acting as data controllers, to ensure their own compliance with a complex web of global privacy laws, including the GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and various state-specific regulations.
- • You will take the lead in conducting thorough Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) and Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), proactively identifying and mitigating potential privacy risks before they materialize.
- • Your role will involve deep cross-functional collaboration. You will partner closely with product managers, engineers, and marketing teams, translating intricate legal requirements into clear, actionable product specifications and development guidelines. You'll provide critical, real-time legal advice during high-stakes decision-making processes, particularly when launching new features that involve sophisticated data processing activities.
- • You will be instrumental in ensuring regulatory compliance across our product suite. This includes conducting detailed reviews of product roadmaps and features to pinpoint all potential privacy implications. You will advise on the lawful bases for data processing, navigate the complexities of cross-border data transfers, and ensure adherence to data subject rights, such as access, deletion, and opt-out requests. A significant part of your work will involve developing and implementing robust privacy-by-design principles, embedding compliance directly into the DNA of our product development cycles.
- • Managing our relationships with data partners, vendors, and third-party service providers will be another critical aspect of your role. You will build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships, meticulously evaluating privacy risks associated with data sharing agreements. This includes performing rigorous due diligence on vendor compliance practices and negotiating contracts to incorporate comprehensive data protection clauses. You will work in tandem with our broader legal and compliance teams to guarantee adherence to all regulatory and contractual obligations.
- • You will play a vital role in incident response for any privacy-related issues, ensuring timely and appropriate notifications to all relevant stakeholders. Furthermore, you will be responsible for designing and delivering engaging training programs for internal teams on privacy best practices, cultivating a company-wide culture of compliance and data stewardship.
- • Your responsibilities will also extend to policy development and advocacy. You will draft, refine, and update internal privacy policies, terms of service, and data processing agreements to reflect current legal landscapes and business needs. You will remain at the cutting edge of evolving privacy laws and industry standards, proactively advocating for strategic changes to mitigate future risks and ensure Clay remains a leader in data privacy. You will also collaborate with external counsel and potentially engage with regulatory bodies when necessary.
- • This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the privacy posture of a rapidly growing, innovative company. Your contributions will directly impact our ability to scale responsibly, maintain customer trust, and solidify Clay's position as a leader in the AI-powered growth market.
🎯 Requirements

- • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in privacy law, with a strong preference for experience within a tech or SaaS environment.
- • Deep understanding of global privacy frameworks such as GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and emerging laws like the EU AI Act or relevant state privacy bills.
- • Proven ability to conduct Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) and Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs).
- • Excellent negotiation and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across diverse, cross-functional teams.
- • CIPP certification (e.g., CIPP/US, CIPP/E) is strongly preferred.

- • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance for you and your dependents.
- • Generous paid time off and company holidays to ensure work-life balance.
- • Access to world-class coaches specializing in creativity, management, and personal development for all employees.
