📋 Description

  • As a Quality Engineer focused on Rack Infrastructure & Site Operations for the Stargate initiative at OpenAI, you will be instrumental in establishing and upholding the highest standards of quality, reliability, and performance for our advanced datacenter systems. This pivotal role ensures that every component, from its inception in manufacturing to its final deployment, meets rigorous quality benchmarks, directly contributing to the successful operation of AI workloads that are shaping the future of technology.
  • Your day-to-day responsibilities will encompass the comprehensive management of product and site quality across OpenAI’s expansive infrastructure. You will be tasked with developing and implementing a robust, quality-centric program that spans our global supply chain network, meticulously overseeing every stage from initial design through to final deployment. A core aspect of your role will involve ensuring the end-to-end quality of all finished products, while simultaneously maintaining and elevating the manufacturing site quality standards. You will collaborate closely with New Product Introduction (NPI) and Engineering teams to achieve critical targets for First Pass Yield (FPY), overall quality, and system reliability. This collaborative effort will include leading essential site and fixture validation initiatives, spearheading yield improvement programs such as Yield Bridge and CPI, and implementing stringent corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to systematically address and resolve issues at their fundamental root causes.
  • Furthermore, you will play a crucial role in the strategic management of supplier quality. This involves conducting thorough assessments and qualifications of new vendors, diligently monitoring the ongoing performance of existing suppliers, and ensuring their readiness to support future business awards. You will lead comprehensive vendor audits, track key performance metrics to identify areas for improvement, and coordinate the implementation of corrective actions. The ultimate goal of these efforts is to ensure predictable delivery schedules, significantly reduce operational risks, and maintain exceptionally high levels of system reliability.
  • By fostering strong partnerships with external suppliers and internal Engineering and Operations stakeholders, you will be a key enabler in ensuring that OpenAI’s datacenter infrastructure is delivered not only on time but also adheres to the most exacting quality standards. Your work will directly support the reliable and scalable operations that are fundamental to OpenAI's mission.
  • You will develop and establish a comprehensive, datacenter-focused manufacturing quality program designed to support ambitious global deployment schedules. This involves defining quality objectives, establishing key performance indicators (KPIs), and creating the necessary frameworks and processes to achieve them. Your efforts will ensure that manufacturing processes are optimized for quality and efficiency, minimizing defects and rework.
  • A significant part of your role will involve conducting thorough vendor capability assessments, performing rigorous quality audits, and actively working to improve vendor performance throughout the production, testing, and delivery phases. This includes developing audit checklists, executing audits, analyzing findings, and collaborating with vendors to implement necessary improvements.
  • You will be responsible for developing and meticulously tracking a suite of quality metrics to accurately assess manufacturing performance. This involves identifying emerging trends, potential risks, and areas for enhancement. Based on this data analysis, you will work proactively to refine processes, enhance training programs, and strengthen quality controls to effectively mitigate deployment risks and ensure consistent product quality.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective cross-functional communication channels between manufacturing sites, datacenter design teams, and operations is paramount. You will act as a central point of contact, facilitating information flow, resolving interdependencies, and ensuring alignment on quality objectives and execution.
  • You will collaborate closely with engineering, sourcing, and site operations teams to define and implement robust quality processes and standards that are directly aligned with project goals and OpenAI's overall strategic objectives.
  • A key aspect of your role will be to mentor supplier teams, providing them with structured, actionable feedback to foster a culture of continuous improvement and drive higher quality outcomes.
  • You will conduct audits of quality activities at supplier sites to rigorously verify compliance with established requirements. Furthermore, you will lead the development and implementation of corrective and preventive action plans to address any audit findings or quality nonconformances identified.
  • You will facilitate thorough root cause analysis for recurring manufacturing issues and datacenter quality and reliability problems, driving systemic process improvements to prevent future occurrences and ensure long-term operational excellence.
  • About the Team: OpenAI, in collaboration with its capital and technology partners, is constructing a global network of state-of-the-art datacenters. These facilities are engineered to handle the most demanding artificial intelligence workloads. The Industrial Compute team is dedicated to ensuring that all datacenter systems are manufactured, delivered, and commissioned to the absolute highest standards of quality, reliability, and performance. This team works in close partnership with manufacturing partners, internal engineering departments, and operations staff to guarantee that every single component is ready for seamless installation, efficient startup, and dependable long-term service.
  • About the Company: OpenAI is a leading AI research and deployment company committed to ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. We are at the forefront of advancing AI capabilities and are dedicated to safely deploying these powerful systems through our innovative products. Recognizing AI as an exceptionally potent tool, we prioritize safety and human needs in its creation. To achieve our mission, we actively embrace and value the diverse perspectives, voices, and experiences that collectively represent the full spectrum of humanity. • In this role, you will gain invaluable experience in developing and implementing quality management systems within a cutting-edge, high-growth technology environment. You will have the opportunity to shape the quality strategy for a critical global infrastructure project, working with leading partners and technologies. This position offers significant opportunities for professional growth, allowing you to deepen your expertise in manufacturing quality, supplier management, and datacenter operations, while contributing directly to the advancement of AI.
