Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Shape the future of propulsion and power systems by pioneering quantum computing applications inside Rolls-Royce’s Future Technology team. You will sit at the intersection of physics, mathematics and engineering, turning abstract quantum theory into robust software that will ultimately influence the design of next-generation gas turbines, electric propulsion units and sustainable aviation fuels.
- • Own end-to-end research programmes with world-leading quantum hardware vendors, Tier-1 universities and UK-government labs. From initial problem scoping and algorithm design through to code delivery and stakeholder sign-off, you will act as both technical lead and trusted consultant, ensuring every experiment maps directly to Rolls-Royce’s strategic product road-map.
- • Develop and benchmark hybrid classical–quantum algorithms that can already be emulated on HPC clusters today and will port seamlessly to fault-tolerant processors tomorrow. Your work will cover two complementary thrusts: (1) quantum chemistry simulations for electronic structure and mesoscale material optimisation, and (2) quantum linear-system solvers with polylogarithmic scaling for time-dependent PDEs arising in thermo-fluid and structural mechanics.
- • Translate complex quantum outputs into actionable engineering insight. You will build Python libraries and micro-services that wrap low-level quantum circuits, exposing clean APIs for aerothermal designers, materials scientists and control-systems engineers who may never touch a qubit themselves.
- • Influence enterprise-scale software architecture. By collaborating with Rolls-Royce’s 400+ software and modelling specialists, you will embed quantum kernels inside existing multi-physics solvers, define data-exchange standards and champion best-practice CI/CD pipelines for quantum-accelerated simulation workflows.
- • Drive technology horizon-scanning activities. You will continuously survey the global landscape—academic pre-prints, patent filings, start-up road-maps—to identify breakthroughs in error-correction, qubit connectivity and algorithmic speed-ups that could leapfrog current engineering methods.
- • Communicate with impact. Whether presenting to the Chief Technology Officer, publishing in Nature Computational Science or running a hackathon for graduate engineers, you will distil intricate quantum concepts into clear narratives that secure funding, win mind-share and accelerate adoption.
- • Mentor and upskill a growing community of quantum-curious engineers. Through brown-bag sessions, pair-programming and code reviews you will cultivate internal talent, ensuring Rolls-Royce builds sustainable in-house capability rather than perpetual external dependence.
- • Contribute to open-source ecosystems. By releasing non-competitive components of your tool-chain (e.g., novel state-loading oracles or measurement-error mitigation routines) you will raise Rolls-Royce’s profile in the global quantum community and attract top-tier collaborators.
- • Maintain the highest standards of safety, security and ethical rigour. Every algorithm you ship will be subjected to the same stringent verification processes that govern flight-critical software, reinforcing Rolls-Royce’s century-long reputation for trust and reliability.
🎯 Requirements
- • Degree in Physics, Mathematics or equivalent, plus postgraduate experience in computational science or classical linear algebra
- • Proven delivery of quantum algorithms using PennyLane, Qiskit, Classiq, Quest or similar frameworks
- • Advanced Python proficiency and demonstrable ability to integrate quantum kernels into classical HPC workflows
- • Strong consultancy and stakeholder-engagement skills, able to translate quantum concepts to non-specialists
- • Beneficial: knowledge of Quantum Phase Estimation, Density Functional Theory, Quantum Singular Value Transformation, or HHL algorithm
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary plus annual bonus scheme tied to personal and company performance
- • Hybrid working (3 days on-site in Derby) with flexible hours managed locally
- • Exceptional employee support assistance programme and generous staff discounts across Rolls-Royce products and partner brands
- • Unmatched career development pathways, including secondments to global research centres and fully funded further education
