- • This Research Internship at Cohere Inc. offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge advancements in large language models and AI systems, directly supporting the company’s mission to scale intelligence for humanity through innovative research and product development.
- • As a Research Intern, you will engage in high-impact machine learning research, collaborate with world-class researchers and engineers, and help translate novel ideas into production-ready models that power real-world AI applications.
- • You will conduct independent and collaborative research on frontier topics in language modeling, including model training, evaluation, multimodal systems, optimization, and safety, with the goal of publishing findings in top-tier venues and contributing to open-source knowledge.
- • Day-to-day responsibilities include designing experiments, implementing and scaling machine learning models using frameworks like PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow, managing large-scale data pipelines, analyzing results, and preparing research outputs such as papers, datasets, and code releases.
- • You will work closely with Cohere’s research teams across areas such as base model training, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), data and evaluation, safety, and fine-tuning, gaining exposure to diverse AI research domains.
- • The role emphasizes practical impact: your work will inform Cohere’s product development, ensuring research translates into tangible improvements in model performance, reliability, and usability for enterprise and developer customers.
- • You are expected to communicate complex technical ideas clearly through internal presentations, documentation, and external publications, strengthening both your technical and scientific communication skills.
- • The internship requires full-time commitment for 4–6 months during Spring/Summer 2026, with eligibility restricted to those currently pursuing a PhD in Machine Learning, NLP, AI, or a related field (exceptional non-PhD candidates may be considered).
- • You must have valid work authorization in Canada for the duration of the internship and be prepared to work in a hybrid or remote-flexible environment, with access to Cohere’s offices in Toronto and other global locations.
- • Success in this role depends on strong programming proficiency (especially Python), hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks, and familiarity with large-scale distributed training, data annotation, and model evaluation techniques.

🎯 Requirements
- • Currently pursuing a PhD in Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related discipline; exceptional non-PhD candidates with strong research backgrounds may also be considered.
- • Proven experience with large-scale distributed training strategies, data annotation and evaluation pipelines, or implementing state-of-the-art machine learning models using frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow.
- • Strong programming skills in Python, with familiarity in languages like C, C++, or Lua, and hands-on experience building systems based on deep learning techniques.
