Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Join Epoch AI’s Consultations & Insights team as a Researcher and become the go-to analyst for governments, investors, AI labs, and non-profits who need fast, authoritative answers about the rapidly evolving AI landscape. You will sit at the intersection of cutting-edge research and high-stakes decision-making, translating complex technical developments into clear, actionable intelligence.
- • Own rapid-turnaround research requests that arrive via Slack and must be answered within hours. Typical queries include: estimating the GPU-hours required for a rumored frontier model, sanity-checking a lab’s claim of 30 % algorithmic efficiency gains, or forecasting power-demand curves for a 100 MW training cluster. You will triage incoming questions, scope the work, and deliver concise memos that quantify uncertainty and cite transparent reasoning.
- • Produce “rapid intelligence briefs” in the immediate aftermath of major AI releases. When a new model drops, you will benchmark its capabilities against Epoch’s historical database, flag off-trend performance, and brief clients within 48 hours. Your write-ups will be read by policy teams deciding on compute export controls and by VCs allocating nine-figure funding rounds.
- • Author deep-dive reports on strategic questions such as reinforcement-learning scaling laws, datacenter power bottlenecks, or 2030 compute supply scenarios. These 10- to 20-page documents synthesize proprietary data, academic literature, and expert interviews, and they often shape public discourse when covered by outlets like TIME or the Financial Times.
- • Deliver hour-long private consultation calls to C-suite executives, policy directors, and technical leaders. You will prepare targeted slide decks, answer follow-ups in real time, and send concise recaps that clients can circulate internally. Calls range from “How real are these open-weight reasoning models?” to “What will a 1 GW cluster cost in 2027?”
- • Build and maintain internal tooling that automates data ingestion, benchmark parsing, and forecast updates. You will write clean, reusable Python scripts that scrape model cards, parse log files, and push results to our live AI Trends Dashboard. Your code will be reviewed by senior researchers and reused across the organization.
- • Collaborate cross-functionally with Epoch’s compute, data-scarcity, and algorithmic-progress teams to ensure your client deliverables reflect the latest internal findings. You will join weekly stand-ups, flag knowledge gaps, and co-author blog posts that bridge public research and client insights.
- • Manage a dynamic portfolio of 5–10 concurrent workstreams, balancing same-day Slack answers with multi-week research projects. You will use Notion boards to track deadlines, escalate blockers, and ensure nothing slips through the cracks.
- • Contribute to Epoch’s public knowledge base by turning sanitized client insights into blog posts, GitHub datasets, or interactive visualizations. Your work will help democratize AI foresight and reinforce Epoch’s reputation as the most rigorous open-source AI analytics hub.
🎯 Requirements
- • Demonstrated ability to make defensible quantitative estimates from sparse data—comfort with Fermi calculations, probabilistic forecasting, and transparent uncertainty bounds
- • Prior research or analyst experience in at least one segment of the AI pipeline (semiconductor supply chains, datacenter power, model training, RL scaling, etc.)
- • Strong coding skills in Python or similar, including the ability to independently scrape, clean, analyze, and visualize data; familiarity with pandas, NumPy, and Jupyter is expected
- • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills—able to distill complex technical findings into concise memos and executive-level slide decks
- • Nice-to-have: proven track record in forecasting tournaments or policy analysis, and familiarity with Epoch AI’s published work on compute trends, data scarcity, and algorithmic progress
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully remote, asynchronous-first culture with flexible hours and the option to relocate to or be sponsored in the US or UK
- • Competitive global benefits package: comprehensive health and life insurance, pension or local equivalent, and a generous equipment & learning stipend
- • Unlimited PTO policy with a minimum of 30 paid days off per year plus up to 6 months of combined paid and unpaid parental leave
- • Three fully funded staff retreats per year in inspiring locations, plus paid attendance at key conferences and access to premium coworking spaces or Epoch’s Berkeley headquarters with meals, gym, and snacks
