📋 Description
- • Canonical is at the forefront of the open-source revolution, powering innovation across the globe with Ubuntu, our flagship operating system. We are a truly global enterprise, with a distributed workforce spanning 75 countries and a commitment to fostering a collaborative and dynamic work environment. Our mission is to enable breakthroughs in critical technology areas such as public cloud, data science, artificial intelligence, engineering innovation, and the Internet of Things (IoT). We partner with the world's leading public cloud providers, silicon manufacturers, and industry titans across diverse sectors, empowering them to achieve their most ambitious goals.
- • As a Revenue Accountant at Canonical, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of our financial reporting, with a specific focus on revenue recognition. This is a critical position that requires a keen eye for detail, a strong understanding of accounting principles, and the ability to navigate complex revenue arrangements. You will be instrumental in supporting our rapid growth and ensuring compliance with all relevant accounting standards and regulations.
- • Your primary responsibilities will encompass the end-to-end revenue accounting process. This includes meticulously reviewing customer contracts to identify and document all performance obligations, ensuring proper revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606 (or relevant local GAAP). You will be responsible for the accurate and timely booking of revenue, deferred revenue, and accounts receivable, ensuring that all entries are supported by appropriate documentation.
- • A significant part of your role will involve collaborating closely with our Sales, Legal, and Operations teams. You will act as a trusted advisor, providing guidance on the revenue implications of new contracts and commercial agreements. This proactive engagement is crucial for mitigating risks and ensuring that revenue is recognized appropriately from the outset. You will also be responsible for preparing and analyzing various revenue-related reports, including monthly and quarterly revenue forecasts, variance analyses, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to support management decision-making.
- • Furthermore, you will contribute to the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring all revenue-related accounts are reconciled and that financial statements accurately reflect the company's revenue performance. This includes preparing journal entries, performing balance sheet reconciliations, and assisting with external audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations.
- • We are looking for an individual who is not only technically proficient but also possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You will need to effectively communicate complex accounting concepts to non-finance stakeholders, fostering a shared understanding of revenue recognition policies and procedures. Your ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced, remote environment will be essential for success.
- • This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a rapidly growing, globally recognized technology company. You will gain exposure to a wide range of revenue streams and complex transactions, further developing your expertise in revenue accounting. Canonical's commitment to distributed collaboration means you'll be working with talented individuals from diverse backgrounds, contributing to a culture of innovation and continuous learning. We believe in empowering our employees and providing them with the resources and support needed to excel. Your work will directly impact our financial health and our ability to invest in future growth and innovation, making this a highly rewarding and impactful position.
- • You will be expected to stay abreast of changes in accounting standards, particularly those related to revenue recognition, and assess their impact on Canonical's financial reporting. This includes actively participating in training and professional development opportunities to maintain and enhance your accounting knowledge. Your proactive approach to identifying and implementing process improvements will be highly valued, as we continuously strive to optimize our financial operations and enhance efficiency.
- • The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, comfortable working autonomously within a remote team structure. You will leverage technology to collaborate effectively with colleagues across different time zones and geographies. Your ability to adapt to evolving business needs and contribute to a positive and productive team dynamic will be key. This role is more than just crunching numbers; it's about being a strategic partner in Canonical's financial success and growth story.
