  • • Sofar Ocean Inc. is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented, and diligent Routing Specialist to join our dynamic and fast-moving team, with a specific focus on supporting our operations in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. This remote position, based in either Singapore or Japan, is ideal for an individual who possesses a deep passion for the ocean and thrives in environments that demand precision, reliability, and collaborative synergy. You will be instrumental in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of our critical services, acting as a vital link between our global team and our Japanese-speaking partners.
  • • In this pivotal role, you will collaborate closely with Sofar's Wayfinder team, undertaking mission-critical operational tasks. Your responsibilities will encompass providing essential ship routing support, managing crucial operational tasks for our data and service products, and assisting the ocean science team in integrating new data sources for advanced analysis. Furthermore, you will play a key role in enhancing our internal tooling, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of our operations.
  • • You are expected to possess strong time management skills, demonstrating the ability to work independently when necessary while also contributing effectively within a team setting. Confidence in your decision-making abilities is paramount, especially when navigating the complexities of cross-cultural communication between Japanese clients and our international team. Your role will require a nuanced understanding of both technical requirements and interpersonal dynamics.
  • • A core component of this position is your fluency in Japanese, both written and spoken. You will serve as an indispensable bridge, facilitating clear and effective communication between Sofar and our Japanese-speaking partners, customers, and contacts within the maritime industry. Building and maintaining trust through precise and culturally sensitive communication will be central to your success.
  • • The ideal candidate will be comfortable with technology and computer systems. Experience with spreadsheet software, familiarity with no-code tools such as Retool and Notion, or even some coding experience would be highly beneficial. Your ability to adapt to and leverage technology will be key to optimizing our operational workflows.
  • • You will be involved in supporting the integration of new data sources for the ocean science team. This involves understanding the data's origin, quality, and potential applications, and working with scientists to ensure seamless integration into our analytical frameworks. This requires a methodical approach and a keen eye for detail to ensure data integrity.
  • • Improving internal tooling is another significant aspect of this role. You will identify areas for enhancement in our existing systems and contribute to the development or implementation of new tools that streamline operations, improve data accessibility, and boost team productivity. This could involve documenting processes, testing new features, or providing feedback on user experience.
  • • Your responsibilities will also extend to ensuring the reliability and accuracy of our data and service products. This means meticulously checking data outputs, verifying operational procedures, and troubleshooting any issues that may arise to maintain the high standards Sofar Ocean is known for.
  • • The role demands an understanding of meteorological and oceanographic data, including familiarity with observation and forecast data such as WaveWatch III, HYCOM, and ECMWF. A strong grasp of mid- and long-range forecasting and weather patterns is essential for providing accurate routing advice.
  • • You will be expected to work weekend rotations, ensuring continuous support and operational coverage. This flexibility is crucial for a global operation that requires round-the-clock attention.
  • • A genuine passion for and/or connection to the oceans is highly valued, aligning with Sofar Ocean's core mission and commitment to marine science and conservation. This passion will drive your dedication and engagement in the role.
  • • Sofar Ocean is deeply committed to climate justice and fostering diversity within marine sciences. We actively encourage applications from individuals who identify as women, LGBTQ+, Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), recognizing that diverse perspectives are crucial for addressing climate challenges and advancing our mission.
