- • MUBI, a globally recognized streaming service, production company, and film distributor, is on a mission to elevate great cinema and make it accessible to audiences worldwide. We achieve this by creating, curating, acquiring, and championing visionary films, brought to life by a passionate and dedicated international team. We are seeking an exceptional Senior Acquisitions Director to join our dynamic Content team and spearhead the day-to-day operations of sourcing, evaluating, and securing independent films that resonate with our core mission of championing specialty cinema and auteur filmmakers.
- • This pivotal role demands a seasoned acquisitions professional with a proven history of success in film acquisitions. You will possess a sharp creative eye for identifying emerging talent and commercially viable independent content, coupled with robust industry relationships and demonstrated deal-making capabilities. As a senior leader within our Acquisitions department, you will play a crucial role in identifying and pursuing compelling content for our extensive global distribution network. Reporting directly to the SVP Distribution & Acquisitions, you will significantly influence the shaping of our content slate, contribute to the development of the overall acquisition strategy, and provide strategic recommendations that solidify our brand positioning within the competitive market.
- • The Senior Acquisitions Director will be instrumental in scouting, tracking, and meticulously evaluating a diverse range of independent films, art-house content, and commercial independent projects. This evaluation will span both pre-buy opportunities and finished film stages, with a focus on theatrical distribution. A comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of the global theatrical independent film landscape is essential. This includes staying abreast of emerging filmmakers, identifying key genre trends, and recognizing international and domestic cultural movements that align with MUBI's distinctive brand identity.
- • You will be tasked with developing and maintaining a robust pipeline of acquisition opportunities, aiming to secure approximately 12-18 high-quality titles per year. This pipeline will encompass narrative features, compelling documentaries, and other specialty content that aligns with MUBI's curated vision. A significant aspect of this role involves representing MUBI at major international film festivals and markets, such as Sundance, Berlin, Cannes, Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), SXSW, and the American Film Market (AFM), among other key industry gatherings. These engagements are critical for identifying new talent and securing promising projects.
- • Building and nurturing strong, long-lasting relationships with filmmakers, sales agents, producers' representatives, and international distributors is paramount. These relationships will ensure MUBI gains early access to the most compelling and sought-after content. Furthermore, you will actively monitor festival submissions and track early industry buzz to identify potential breakout films and pre-buy titles before they enter the highly competitive acquisition stage.
- • A core responsibility will be to lead the negotiation of acquisition deals. This will involve close collaboration with our Legal, Business Affairs, and Finance teams to meticulously define deal terms and structure contracts effectively. You will also be responsible for evaluating complex financial models, P&L projections, and proposed distribution strategies to inform acquisition recommendations and pricing decisions. Developing and maintaining a multi-year independent film acquisition strategy, in close partnership with the SVP, will be key to supporting MUBI's brand, commercial objectives, and company OKRs.
- • Providing critical market intelligence, conducting thorough competitive analysis, and offering insights into industry trends will be vital in shaping our content strategy and positioning decisions. You will also serve as a key liaison, collaborating closely with the Distribution, Marketing, and Programming teams to ensure that all acquired titles are strategically positioned for optimal performance across all MUBI's platforms. Finally, you will be responsible for presenting comprehensive acquisition recommendations to senior leadership, supported by detailed creative analysis, robust financial modeling, and a clear strategic rationale.
- • This role offers a unique opportunity to significantly impact MUBI's global content strategy and contribute to the continued success of a company dedicated to celebrating and distributing exceptional cinema.
