- • The Senior Burn Crew Member (SBCM) plays a critical role in building prescribed fire capacity across the Nebraska Sandhills, a 12-million-acre temperate grassland ecosystem, by supporting wildland fire operations and community-based cooperative burning programs to combat woody plant encroachment and protect grassland health.
- • Day-to-day responsibilities include overseeing staff and volunteers during prescribed fires, conducting ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, and monitoring activities, preparing fire lines, monitoring post-burn conditions, and participating in trainings, workshops, and meetings with private landowners and conservation partners.
- • The role operates within The Nature Conservancy’s Nebraska Fire Team, a mission-driven organization dedicated to protecting lands and waters through science-based conservation, with a strong emphasis on community engagement, inclusivity, and professional development in fire management.
- • The SBCM will gain advanced fire qualifications (e.g., RXCM, FFT2), build expertise in burn techniques and equipment, earn professional certifications, and develop leadership and relationship-building skills within the fire and conservation communities while contributing to the preservation of one of the world’s largest intact grasslands.
🎯 Requirements
- • High school diploma or equivalent.
- • Ability to obtain Prescribed Fire Crew Member (RXCM) or Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2) qualifications, including completion of I-100, L-180, S-190, S-130, and a supervised training burn.
- • Must meet physical fitness standards set by the local Prescribed Fire Manager and TNC Fire Management Manual.
- • Experience operating various types of equipment and ability to obtain related certifications (e.g., First Aid, CPR).
- • Valid driver’s license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program, including completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement.
