📋 Description

• Serve as primary legal counsel for product teams developing frontier AI models and technologies, including ChatGPT, Codex, agentic systems, multimodal outputs, search, and commerce applications.
• Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks across product development lifecycle, including issues related to copyright, privacy, data security, regulatory compliance, AI ethics, and commercial use cases.
• Develop scalable legal frameworks and processes to address emerging AI-specific legal challenges in dynamic, ambiguous environments.
• Advise product managers, engineers, and designers on compliant design and deployment of AI systems, balancing innovation with responsible governance.
• Lead the creation and advocacy of AI legal policy positions internally and externally, shaping OpenAI’s stance on emerging regulatory and legislative landscapes.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with teams in research, engineering, safety, compliance, and public policy to embed legal foresight into product roadmaps.
• Analyze and interpret complex international and domestic regulations impacting AI deployment, including but not limited to data localization, generative AI disclosure rules, and intellectual property boundaries.
• Draft, review, and negotiate agreements related to AI product licensing, third-party integrations, data use, and platform partnerships.
• Provide timely legal guidance on emerging use cases involving autonomous AI agents, real-time content generation, and multimodal human-AI interaction.
• Act as subject matter expert on AI legal issues within OpenAI, training and advising non-legal teams on legal implications of AI features and functionalities.
• Contribute to internal governance structures by participating in risk review boards, product launch committees, and safety review panels.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of global AI legal developments, court rulings, regulatory proposals, and industry standards affecting AI product development.
• Represent OpenAI in legal discussions with regulators, standards bodies, and external stakeholders on matters related to AI product deployment.
• Ensure alignment of product initiatives with OpenAI’s mission of ensuring general-purpose AI benefits all of humanity, integrating safety and ethical considerations into legal strategy.
• Work from San Francisco office three days per week under a hybrid work model, with relocation assistance provided for new hires.

🎯 Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in in-house or technology-focused law firm roles
• Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active license or qualification to practice law in California
• Proven track record of advising on AI, technology, intellectual property, privacy, and regulatory legal issues
• Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguous legal landscapes with sound judgment and principled decision-making
• Strong cross-functional communication skills and ability to build trust with technical and product teams
• Experience developing scalable legal strategies for high-speed, innovative tech environments
