📋 Description

• Serve as Senior Counsel embedded within Kraken’s Product, Design, and Engineering teams to provide legal guidance across the full product lifecycle—from ideation to launch and iteration—for consumer, institutional, and market products including tokenized equities, margin trading, institutional custody, prime brokerage, financing, and OTC services.
• Own and lead licensing and registration strategies across priority jurisdictions including the UK, EU, and other international markets, scoping regulatory requirements, coordinating external counsel, compiling application materials, and managing direct interactions with financial regulators.
• Translate complex financial regulations—including MiFID, EMIR, MiCA, AMLD5, UK financial promotions, and e-money rules—into practical, business-aligned controls and go-to-market guardrails that enable product teams to move swiftly while remaining compliant.
• Draft, review, and negotiate client terms and conditions with a focus on clear, commercially pragmatic language that balances legal risk with business objectives.
• Provide crisp, actionable, and decision-ready legal advice to non-lawyer stakeholders including product managers, engineers, and compliance teams, using plain-English communication to distill intricate regulatory issues into clear risk tradeoffs and options.
• Support regulatory incident responses and supervisory inquiries by preparing well-reasoned written submissions, evidence packages, and compliance documentation.
• Partner cross-functionally to advance Kraken’s global licensing initiatives and ensure alignment between legal strategy and product roadmap, particularly around emerging crypto-asset services and institutional financial products.
• Foster a culture of clarity and commercial accountability by prioritizing pragmatic legal solutions that enable innovation while maintaining regulatory integrity.
• Maintain deep familiarity with Kraken’s product suite and competitor offerings in the crypto and digital asset space, applying this knowledge to contextualize legal advice within real-world product usage and market dynamics.
• Operate as a practical legal generalist with expertise spanning both traditional financial services regulation and evolving crypto-asset frameworks, combining regulatory fluency with a crypto-forward mindset.
• Drive efficiency in legal operations by leveraging AI tools such as Enterprise GPTs to automate routine legal queries, create custom legal assistants for stakeholder self-service, and streamline compliance workflows.
• Work fully remotely while collaborating across global time zones with teams in the UK, EU, and other jurisdictions to support Kraken’s international product and licensing goals.

🎯 Requirements

• Qualified lawyer (Solicitor/Barrister of England & Wales, Irish Solicitor/Barrister, or equivalent admitted in an EU Member State)
• 10+ years’ PQE in financial services law within a regulated institution (e.g., exchange, broker-dealer, asset manager, bank, crypto services provider) or law firm supporting such clients, with direct product counseling experience
• Demonstrated experience advising on MiFID investment services and familiarity with crypto-asset regimes including MiCA, AMLD5, UK financial promotions, and e-money regulations
• Proven track record leading licensing/registration efforts, including planning, application submissions, regulator engagement, and operationalization
• Outstanding analytical, drafting, and organizational skills with crisp, plain-English writing ability
• Ability to distill complex legal and regulatory issues into clear, actionable guidance for non-lawyer stakeholders
