Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • You will join a small, senior, and fully-remote engineering team that ships production code used by thousands of developers every day. Your work will directly unblock the delivery pipelines of companies like Airbnb, Shopify, Canva, PagerDuty, Lyft, and Pinterest, accelerating their ability to release software safely and at scale.
- • Own and evolve the core execution engine that orchestrates millions of CI/CD jobs per month. You will refactor, extend, and harden a distributed system written in Go and Ruby that runs on thousands of customer-controlled agents across the globe, ensuring sub-second scheduling latency and 99.9 % uptime.
- • Design and deliver high-impact features that solve real-world developer pain points. Recent examples include dynamic pipeline generation, fine-grained step-level permissions, and real-time log streaming at gigabyte scale. You will take ideas from whiteboard to production, collaborating with product, design, and customers to validate impact and iterate quickly.
- • Champion observability and reliability across the stack. You will instrument services with OpenTelemetry, define SLIs/SLOs, and build automated canary deployments so that every change can be rolled out confidently. When incidents occur, you will lead blameless post-mortems and turn lessons learned into systemic improvements.
- • Mentor and pair with engineers across experience levels. You will run architecture reviews, give actionable feedback on pull requests, and foster a culture of continuous learning. Your influence will raise the technical bar for the entire organization.
- • Contribute to open-source projects that underpin the Buildkite ecosystem, such as the agent, the Buildkite Terraform provider, and the Buildkite CLI. Your commits will be visible to the broader DevOps community and shape industry standards.
- • Engage directly with customers via Slack, GitHub issues, and occasional video calls. You will translate complex user requirements into elegant technical solutions, turning customer feedback into roadmap items and ensuring that Buildkite remains the most loved CI/CD platform.
- • Optimize for performance and cost at planet scale. You will profile CPU and memory usage, tune database queries, and leverage AWS spot fleets to cut compute spend without compromising speed. Your optimizations will save customers millions of dollars in infrastructure costs.
- • Shape the technical direction of the company. You will participate in quarterly planning, propose architectural RFCs, and make build-vs-buy decisions that affect the next five years of the product. Your voice will be heard at the highest levels of the organization.
- • Work from anywhere with a flexible, asynchronous schedule. The team spans from UTC-8 to UTC+11, so you can choose when and where you work best. We default to written communication and recorded demos, ensuring everyone stays in sync without endless meetings.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of backend engineering experience with at least one statically typed language (Go, Rust, Java, or C#) and one dynamic language (Ruby, Python, or JavaScript)
- • Proven track record designing and operating distributed systems at scale (≥1 M requests/day or ≥1 k concurrent jobs)
- • Deep understanding of CI/CD concepts—pipelines, agents, artifacts, secrets, and deployment strategies—and the ability to debug complex build failures
- • Nice-to-have: contributions to open-source DevOps or developer tooling projects, or prior experience working in a fully remote, async-first team
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully remote and async-first culture with no core hours; work from any timezone and any location that has reliable internet
- • Competitive salary benchmarked to San Francisco rates regardless of where you live, plus equity in a profitable, fast-growing company
- • Annual learning & development budget of USD 5 k for conferences, courses, books, or hardware
- • 4-day work week (32 hours) at full pay, plus 20 days paid vacation and 10 days paid sick leave per year
