- • Design, develop, and validate liquid cooling and thermal management fluid systems for the X-BAT jet-engine VTOL military UAV platform, ensuring performance under extreme operational conditions.
- • Own the end-to-end development of fluid system components including piping, pumps, heat exchangers, reservoirs, and control valves, from concept through flight certification.
- • Perform detailed system and component analysis, including thermal modeling, pressure drop calculations, flow rate optimization, and reliability assessments using industry-standard simulation tools.
- • Size and select fluid system components based on mission profiles, environmental constraints, and weight/power budgets specific to unmanned aerial systems.
- • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and autonomy teams to integrate fluid systems with aircraft structure, power systems, and Hivemind autonomy software.
- • Engage directly with suppliers and vendors to source high-reliability components, manage technical specifications, and oversee quality assurance for flight-critical hardware.
- • Lead system-level testing and validation activities, including bench tests, environmental chamber tests, and ground-based fluid loop simulations.
- • Travel to Shield AI’s Newton, KS flight test site to support flight test campaigns, monitor system performance in real-time from the control room, and troubleshoot fluid system anomalies during flight operations.
- • Document design decisions, test results, and failure analyses in compliance with defense aerospace documentation standards.
- • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and configuration control meetings to ensure alignment with program milestones and regulatory requirements.
- • Maintain technical ownership of fluid systems throughout the product lifecycle, from prototype to production readiness.
- • Interface with program management and engineering leadership to communicate progress, risks, and resource needs for fluid system development.
- • Apply aerospace industry best practices for fluid system design, including contamination control, leak prevention, and redundancy strategies for mission-critical applications.
- • Contribute to continuous improvement of fluid system design processes and standards across Shield AI’s air vehicle programs.
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field; Master’s degree preferred
- • Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in fluid systems design, specifically in aerospace, defense, or high-performance automotive applications
- • Proven experience with liquid cooling and thermal management systems for jet-engine or high-power-density platforms
- • Proficiency in fluid dynamics simulation tools such as ANSYS Fluent, SolidWorks Flow Simulation, or equivalent
- • Hands-on experience with component selection, supplier management, and flight-critical hardware procurement
- • Demonstrated ability to lead system-level testing and validation in dynamic, high-stakes environments
- • Willingness and ability to travel to flight test sites, including Newton, KS, for extended periods during campaign cycles
