📋 Description

• As a Senior Engineering Manager for the Search Retrieval Domain within Global Discovery at Delivery Hero SE, you will be at the forefront of shaping how millions of customers worldwide discover the products and services they need. This is a critical leadership position responsible for the foundational components of our customer search experience, impacting every interaction our users have when seeking their next meal or essential item.
• You will lead and scale a domain comprised of multiple autonomous squads, each focused on distinct aspects of our search retrieval capabilities. This includes managing and mentoring a team of Engineering Managers and senior Individual Contributors, fostering their growth, and empowering them to deliver exceptional results. A key aspect of your role will be to establish a robust delegation framework, ensuring that decision-making authority resides as close to the operational context as possible, thereby promoting agility and ownership.
• Your leadership will be instrumental in building a durable second layer of leadership within the domain, cultivating talent, and attracting top-tier engineering professionals to join our mission. This involves creating an environment where engineers can thrive, innovate, and contribute to the company's success.
• You will own the Tier-1 Search Services, which are the backbone of our customer-facing search functionality. This entails leading the squads responsible for our core retrieval services, ensuring they meet the stringent demands of global scalability, ultra-low latency, and unwavering high availability. Your strategic direction will guide the architectural evolution of these services, transitioning them from legacy systems towards modern, efficient retrieval and indexing paradigms that can handle immense traffic and data volumes.
• Driving Technical and Operational Excellence will be a paramount focus. You will define, meticulously monitor, and continuously improve domain-level Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Service Level Agreements (S SLAs). This includes championing best-in-class on-call practices, ensuring swift and effective incident response, and fostering a culture of thorough post-mortems to learn from every event. Your commitment to engineering rigor will ensure that our practices are not only documented but actively lived and consistently enhanced.
• You will be instrumental in shaping the Long-term Domain Vision. This involves translating high-level, tribe-level objectives into a clear, actionable technical roadmap for the retrieval domain. You will skillfully balance the imperative for new feature development with the non-negotiable requirements of system reliability, cost efficiency, and ongoing modernization initiatives. Staying abreast of cutting-edge developments in search technologies will be crucial, enabling you to identify and capitalize on opportunities to adopt innovative solutions that keep Delivery Hero at the vanguard of search.
• Partnering effectively across Product and Engineering teams is essential for success. You will collaborate closely with Product Management to shape the long-term search strategy and define critical investment areas. Furthermore, you will coordinate complex cross-team initiatives and work synergistically with other domain leaders to guarantee seamless integration and a cohesive experience across the entire Search and Discovery ecosystem.

🎯 Requirements

• Proven experience in managing and scaling engineering teams, ideally with a focus on distributed systems, search, or large-scale data platforms.
• Strong technical background in areas such as information retrieval, search indexing, distributed systems, and cloud-native architectures.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop Engineering Managers and senior individual contributors, fostering leadership growth.
• Experience in defining and driving technical strategy, roadmaps, and architectural evolution for complex systems.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across product and engineering organizations.
• Experience with defining and monitoring SLOs/SLAs and driving operational excellence in a high-availability environment.
