Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Own the full mechanical architecture for next-generation hosting and edge-computing hardware that powers more than 20 million customer sites worldwide. You will translate ambitious performance, density, and sustainability targets into robust sheet-metal, thermal, and structural designs that ship at high volume.
- • Drive the complete product lifecycle—from early concept sketches and trade-off studies through EVT, DVT, PVT, and mass production—while partnering with electrical, firmware, supply-chain, and data-center operations teams to ensure every gram, watt, and dollar is optimized.
- • Lead thermal simulations (Icepak, Flotherm, or similar) and empirical validation in our on-site lab and third-party chambers, achieving ≤ 35 °C ΔT at 35 kW rack loads while staying within acoustic and cost constraints.
- • Spearhead Design for Excellence (DFx) initiatives: DFM with Asian ODMs/JDMs, DFA for sub-5-minute field replacement, DFS to exceed 5-year corrosion specs, and DFR to hit ≥ 200 k power-on-hours MTBF.
- • Invent and patent novel mechanical solutions—such as tool-less PCIe retimers, blind-mate liquid-cooling manifolds, and vibration-isolated NVMe carriers—that become differentiating IP for GoDaddy’s infrastructure portfolio.
- • Create and maintain detailed CAD (SolidWorks/NX) and PLM (Arena, Windchill) artifacts, including complex sheet-metal assemblies, injection-molded plastics, die-cast housings, and machined cold plates with GD&T callouts that meet IPC and ASME standards.
- • Run structural FEA to validate 3-axis shock & vibe survivability per IEC 60068-2-64, seismic anchoring per IBC Zone 4, and shipping drop-test compliance up to 42U rack configurations.
- • Collaborate with EEs on placement, routing, and stack-up of high-speed PCBs to minimize EMI, optimize airflow, and guarantee serviceability of hot-pluggable modules without cable strain.
- • Negotiate directly with suppliers in China, Taiwan, and Mexico to select materials (SGCC, AL6061-T6, LCP, PPS), finishes (e-coat, chromate, powder), and secondary processes (PEM, rivet, weld) that balance cost, lead-time, and RoHS/REACH compliance.
- • Establish and track KPI dashboards for mechanical BOM cost, NRE spend, yield, and field RMA rates; present monthly to VP Engineering and Ops, driving data-backed decisions that save millions annually.
- • Mentor junior engineers and interns through design reviews, tolerance-stack tutorials, and thermal boot camps, fostering a culture of rigorous engineering and inclusive collaboration.
- • Champion sustainability by specifying recycled aluminum alloys, minimizing packaging volume, and designing for end-of-life disassembly, aligning with GoDaddy’s 2030 carbon-neutral commitment.
- • Travel up to 15 % to Asia and domestic data centers for bring-up, compliance audits, and on-site failure analysis, ensuring seamless transition from NPI to steady-state production.
🎯 Requirements
- • 8+ years of mechanical design experience delivering high-volume (10k+ units) compute, storage, or networking hardware
- • Expert proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, NX, or Creo) and simulation tools (ANSYS, Flotherm, Icepak)
- • Demonstrated success owning thermal, structural, and DFx requirements from concept through mass production
- • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; MS preferred
🏖️ Benefits
- • Hybrid work model—split your week between our SOMA design studio and your home office
- • 100 % employer-paid medical, dental, and vision for you and 75 % for dependents
- • 401(k) with 6 % company match and immediate vesting
- • Annual $2,500 professional-development stipend plus patent-bonus program
- • 20 days PTO, 10 paid holidays, and one volunteer day off each year
