- • Lead the end-to-end litigation strategy for a major government-owned utility delivering essential services across the Northern Territory, including electricity, water, and sewerage networks.
- • Develop, refine, and execute strategic approaches to high-stakes regulatory disputes and complex litigation matters, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and long-term risk management.
- • Manage and direct external law firms, overseeing strategic positioning, quality of advice, and commercial outcomes across all major legal disputes.
- • Shape the organization’s response to investigations and enforcement actions by regulators including the ACCC and energy market authorities.
- • Identify, assess, and communicate legal, commercial, and reputational risks associated with significant disputes and regulatory proceedings to executive leadership.
- • Provide strategic counsel to senior leadership on dispute trajectories, negotiation options, settlement strategies, and organizational positioning in high-value matters.
- • Ensure uninterrupted leadership and continuity of litigation activities during an extended executive leave period, maintaining momentum and strategic clarity.
- • Maintain consistent oversight of all litigation matters with a requirement to be based in Darwin for two weeks per month and work remotely for the remaining two weeks.
- • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to integrate legal strategy with operational and commercial priorities across urban and remote service areas.
- • Deliver high-quality, commercially grounded legal guidance that balances regulatory compliance with organizational sustainability and public service obligations.
- • Act as the primary legal point of contact for regulatory bodies and external counsel, ensuring coordinated and consistent messaging across all litigation and enforcement matters.
- • Contribute to the broader legal function by mentoring junior legal staff and supporting knowledge transfer within the organization.
- • Operate within a flexible, on-demand legal services model through Axiom, contributing to impactful work with a leading global client while maintaining professional autonomy.
🎯 Requirements
- • 15–20+ years of experience leading complex disputes, preferably with exposure to regulatory or government-related matters.
- • Demonstrated ability to operate as a senior strategic legal advisor within a large, multifaceted organization.
- • Proven experience engaging with regulators such as the ACCC, energy market bodies, or equivalent high-impact authorities.
- • Capacity to be based in Darwin, Australia, for two weeks per month, with remote work for the remaining two weeks.
