- • As Senior Legal Counsel for Subscriptions at DuckDuckGo, you will serve as the dedicated legal expert ensuring global compliance for the company’s subscription offering while enabling rapid, confident business expansion into new markets. This role is critical to DuckDuckGo’s mission of raising the standard of trust online by embedding legal foresight into product development, marketing, and finance decisions from ideation through launch.
- • You will own all subscription-related legal matters end-to-end, including building and maintaining a scalable legal framework to track evolving requirements across multiple jurisdictions, reviewing and advising on in-product notices, terms of service, and marketing materials, and analyzing legal implications for online payments, free trials, promotions, and auto-renewal notices in compliance with global regulations.
- • You will work closely as a true partner with product, engineering, marketing, and finance teams to integrate legal thinking into day-to-day decisions, proactively identifying risks and opportunities, and ensuring that subscription features launch with both innovation and regulatory adherence.
- • DuckDuckGo is a profitable, remote-first company of 300+ team members founded in 2008, with over $100M in annual revenue and millions of users relying on its privacy-focused products including its browser, search engine, and Privacy Pro subscription service. The company operates on a culture of trust, inclusivity, and empowered project management, where individuals take full ownership of their work from scoping to postmortem.
- • The Law & Policy team operates with high autonomy and cross-functional influence, offering you the opportunity to shape how a mission-driven tech company navigates complex global regulatory landscapes while scaling a consumer-facing subscription product with integrity and innovation.
- • In this role, you will deepen your expertise in international consumer protection law, e-commerce regulations, and digital subscription models, while gaining direct impact on how a trusted brand scales responsibly. You will develop leadership in proactive legal strategy, cross-functional influence, and translating complex legal requirements into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders.
🎯 Requirements
- • At least 7 years of legal experience, with in-house experience preferred.
- • Experience advising on subscription services, consumer-facing software products, or e-commerce, including drafting terms of service.
- • Proven ability to work autonomously to proactively track evolving legal requirements across multiple jurisdictions and serve as a hands-on implementer and cross-functional partner.
- • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and active membership in good standing in one U.S. state bar.
- • Strong time management and prioritization skills suited to a fast-paced, remote-first environment.
- • Ability to translate complex legal advice into clear, actionable guidance for non-lawyers across product, engineering, marketing, and finance teams.
🏖️ Benefits
- • $178,500 USD annual base salary with stock options, with compensation transparent and identical across professional levels regardless of geographic location.
- • Eligibility for company-sponsored health benefits for U.S.-based team members, including medical, dental, and vision coverage.
- • Access to DuckDuckGo’s Team Member Support Guide resources, including paid parental leave, office setup stipends, and co-working allowances to support remote work wellbeing.
- • Flexible work arrangement with no core hours, enabling autonomy over schedule while maintaining an average 40-hour weekly commitment.
- • Opportunity to attend two annual in-person events: an all-hands meetup and a team retreat (each 4–5 days), fostering connection and culture in a remote-first environment.
- • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with equal opportunity employment and accommodations available for applicants with disabilities during the hiring process.
