đź“‹ Description

  • • DataKind is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Technical Project Manager to spearhead our technical project management function. This pivotal role is designed for an individual who thrives in a dynamic, mission-driven environment and possesses a unique blend of hands-on technical project leadership and team management expertise. As a Senior Technical Project Manager, you will be instrumental in driving the development and scaling of our mission-critical products, ensuring their successful and timely delivery.
  • • This is a fully remote position, open to candidates located anywhere within the United States. While remote, the expectation is that your working hours will primarily align with the Eastern Time Zone, typically between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM ET, to facilitate collaboration with key stakeholders and teams.
  • • Reporting directly to the Vice President of Technology, you will be a key leader within the technology department. Your responsibilities will encompass both strategic oversight and tactical execution. You will be expected to lead the Technical Project Management (TPM) practice, establishing best practices, standards, and scalable processes. Simultaneously, you will manage a significant individual workload, taking ownership of critical projects from inception to completion.
  • • A core aspect of this role involves coaching and mentoring a small team of 1-2 Technical Project Managers. You will guide their professional development, helping them grow into skilled practitioners, even if they do not possess traditional project management backgrounds. This leadership component requires a strong ability to delegate, provide constructive feedback, and foster a collaborative team environment.
  • • You will serve as the primary liaison between various departments, including Research, Education, Product, Engineering, and Data Science. Your ability to effectively translate organizational technology priorities into coordinated, actionable delivery plans will be crucial. This involves understanding the nuances of each team's contributions and ensuring seamless integration of their efforts.
  • • The Senior Technical Project Manager will be deeply involved in the day-to-day details of project execution. This includes, but is not limited to, meticulous sprint planning, facilitating effective sprint reviews and retrospectives, managing project backlogs, tracking progress against milestones, identifying and mitigating risks, and ensuring clear, consistent communication with all stakeholders.
  • • You will be responsible for managing a complex portfolio of projects, each with its own set of internal and external stakeholders. This requires exceptional organizational skills, the ability to prioritize effectively, and a proactive approach to stakeholder management. Building and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders, understanding their needs, and managing their expectations will be paramount to success.
  • • This role demands a hands-on approach. You will be expected to "roll up your sleeves" and actively participate in technical discussions, contribute to technical decision-making processes, and ensure that projects are technically sound and aligned with DataKind's overall technology strategy.
  • • You will play a key role in establishing and refining the TPM practice at DataKind. This includes developing standardized methodologies, implementing project management tools and frameworks, and ensuring consistent application of these standards across all projects. Your efforts will directly contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of our technology delivery.
  • • The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and experience in applying them in a technical context. You should be adept at managing software development lifecycles, from requirements gathering and design through development, testing, deployment, and post-launch support.
  • • You will be responsible for creating and maintaining comprehensive project documentation, including project plans, status reports, risk registers, and post-mortem analyses. Clear and concise communication, both written and verbal, is essential for this role.
  • • Ultimately, the Senior Technical Project Manager will be a driving force behind DataKind's technological advancements, ensuring that our projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the highest quality standards, thereby enabling us to further our mission.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Proven experience as a Technical Project Manager, with a strong track record of successfully delivering complex technical projects, preferably in a software development or data-intensive environment.
  • • Demonstrated experience in leading and mentoring project management teams, including individuals who may not have traditional PM backgrounds.
  • • Deep understanding of agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and experience in applying them to technical projects, including sprint planning, backlog management, and risk mitigation.
  • • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to effectively liaise between technical and non-technical teams, and manage expectations of diverse groups.
  • • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Project Management, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Competitive salary range of $110,000 - $130,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • • Fully remote work environment, offering flexibility and work-life balance.
  • • Opportunity to lead and shape the technical project management function within a mission-driven organization.
  • • Professional development and mentorship opportunities for team members.
  • • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans.
  • • Generous paid time off and holiday schedule.
