- • Software Engineer at Cognition works on building AI software agents like Devin and Windsurf, tackling hard problems in applied AI such as reasoning across large codebases, coordinating subagents, and ensuring reliable tool use in ambiguous, long-horizon tasks.
- • Day to day, the engineer will design and ship core agent infrastructure, improve Windsurf as an AI-native IDE, collaborate with researchers to translate model capabilities into product features, and own reliability and performance of systems handling millions of agentic tasks.
- • Cognition is a small, talent-dense applied AI lab founded by competitive programmers and researchers from Scale AI, Palantir, Cursor, Google DeepMind, and similar organizations, focused on creating AI that acts as a genuine teammate to engineers.
- • In this role, the engineer will shape the future of AI software engineering, gain deep expertise in agent systems and LLM-powered tools, and have direct influence on product direction and technical priorities in a high-impact, fast-moving environment.
🎯 Requirements
- • Strong Python proficiency with experience writing clean, well-structured code and owning large Python codebases in production
- • Systems engineering depth: experience building reliable, performant distributed systems with strong opinions on correctness and production behavior
- • Prior experience at a frontier AI lab, applied AI company, or developer tools company
- • Degree from a top-tier university in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or related technical discipline
- • Comfort with ambiguity and ability to make progress on hard problems with incomplete specs
- • Track record of shipping quickly while maintaining high code quality expected in a high-density team
