  • • As a Software Quality Specialist II at Nelnet Business Services, you will play a critical role in ensuring the reliability, performance, and usability of software products that serve over 1,300 higher education institutions, 11,500 K-12 schools, and millions of students and families worldwide. Your work directly impacts the quality of payment technology, education services, and learning management solutions used by faith-based and educational organizations, helping to uphold Nelnet’s mission of creating opportunities where people live, learn, and work.
  • • You will work with minimal supervision to drive continuous improvement in software quality by defining testable user stories, validating automated and manual testing processes, triaging defects, and leading after-action reviews that foster team learning and process refinement. Your deep understanding of the business domain enables you to bridge technical testing with real-world user needs, ensuring products meet both functional and accessibility standards.
  • • You will join a mission-driven team at Nelnet Business Services, a division of Nelnet, Inc., known for its culture of service, innovation, and long-term partnerships with education and faith-based communities. The team values creativity, collaboration, and data-informed decision-making, and operates in a hybrid work model that balances remote flexibility with periodic in-office collaboration at the Draper, Utah location.
  • • In this role, you will develop expertise in quality assurance leadership, test automation best practices, and cross-functional collaboration with software developers and product teams. You will have the opportunity to create learning materials for peers, influence testing standards across the organization, and grow into a trusted quality advocate who shapes how software is built, tested, and delivered at scale.
  • • Your day-to-day responsibilities include: defining testable user stories with clear test cases and acceptance criteria; reviewing automated test cases to ensure they support high-quality continuous deployment; monitoring software logs, metrics, and performance data to detect issues or improvement opportunities; triaging, validating, and tracking reported bugs or issues; leading after-action reviews to ensure the team learns from defects and improves QA practices; verifying that products meet UX design standards and accessibility guidelines (such as WCAG); identifying inefficiencies in automated tests and proposing enhancements; conducting manual and exploratory testing to validate test coverage and uncover edge cases; contributing to the evolution of automated test standards and best practices; and creating training materials to upskill other Software QA Specialists on tools, techniques, and domain knowledge.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • • 3+ years of experience with NBS products or in a similar QA role at another company
  • • 1+ years of experience reading and understanding programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, JavaScript)
  • • 1+ years of experience with database querying (SQL or MongoDB)
  • • Ability to handle multiple priorities and work effectively under pressure
  • • Strong understanding of how business requirements translate into technical requirements and test scenarios
