  • • As a Sourcer for Forward Deployment Engineering at OpenAI, you will play a critical role in identifying and engaging top technical talent to support the company’s mission of building safe artificial general intelligence (AGI) that benefits all of humanity.   • • You will partner closely with hiring managers and recruiters within the Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team to design and execute targeted sourcing strategies, manage the full candidate lifecycle from initial outreach to onsite interview coordination, and ensure a seamless, high-touch candidate experience that reflects OpenAI’s commitment to excellence and inclusivity.
  • • The Recruiting team at OpenAI is a mission-driven, relationship-first unit that collaborates across the organization to attract talent capable of shaping the future of AI. Embedded within the FDE recruitment pod, you will work alongside recruiters, sourcers, and coordination specialists to support hiring for high-impact technical roles that power real-world AI applications.
  • • In this role, you will develop deep expertise in sourcing for specialized engineering functions, refine data-driven recruitment processes, and contribute to innovative talent mapping and engagement strategies — positioning yourself as a strategic partner in building OpenAI’s next-generation technical workforce.
  • • Partner with hiring managers across Forward Deployed Engineering to build and improve recruiting processes and develop customized sourcing strategies tailored to the unique needs of FDE teams, including forward deployed engineers, software engineers, machine learning engineers, and AI engineers.
  • • Build highly targeted Boolean and semantic searches using LinkedIn Recruiter, Ashby, and other sourcing platforms to identify passive and active candidates with niche technical backgrounds and domain expertise relevant to AI deployment and engineering.
  • • Craft personalized, thoughtful outreach messages that resonate with high-caliber technical talent, leveraging insights from candidate profiles, public contributions, and professional networks to increase response rates and engagement.
  • • Cultivate long-term relationships with priority talent through consistent touchpoints, talent mapping, and market intelligence gathering, maintaining a warm pipeline of qualified candidates for current and future roles.
  • • Serve as the primary point of contact for candidates from initial outreach through the onsite interview stage, providing timely updates, answering questions, and ensuring a respectful, transparent, and engaging experience that reinforces OpenAI’s employer brand.
  • • Employ creative and non-traditional sourcing tactics — such as monitoring technical forums, open-source contributions, conference speaker lists, and platforms like challenge.openai.com — to uncover hidden talent pools and diversify the candidate pipeline.
  • • Maintain rigorous data hygiene in the ATS, track key sourcing metrics (e.g., response rates, conversion rates, time-to-fill), and use insights to continuously optimize sourcing strategies and report on pipeline health to stakeholders.
  • • Represent OpenAI at industry events, tech talks, university career fairs, and AI conferences to network with potential candidates, promote the company’s mission, and source talent in real-world settings.
  • • Collaborate on cross-functional recruiting initiatives, including process improvements, employer branding campaigns, and diversity sourcing efforts, contributing your expertise to enhance the effectiveness and equity of OpenAI’s hiring practices.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 5+ years of proven experience in technical sourcing, specifically for engineering roles such as forward deployed engineers, software engineers, machine learning engineers, or AI engineers, with a demonstrated ability to identify and engage niche technical talent.
  • • Proficiency with modern recruitment tools including Ashby, LinkedIn Recruiter, and applicant tracking systems (ATS), coupled with a strong aptitude for learning and adapting to new platforms and technologies.
  • • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, enabling the crafting of persuasive outreach messages and effective collaboration with global hiring managers, recruiters, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • • A track record of delivering consistent candidate volume while maintaining high responsiveness, personalized engagement, and a strong focus on candidate experience throughout the funnel.
  • • Demonstrated success in attracting and engaging top 1% technical talent, supported by examples of hires who have made significant impacts in their roles.
  • • High adaptability and comfort operating in fast-paced, ambiguous environments, with the ability to balance strategic thinking with tactical execution and pivot priorities as business needs evolve.
