- • The Specialist, Shelter Engagement plays a direct role in advancing Best Friends Animal Society’s no-kill mission by supporting partner shelters in achieving lifesaving goals through hands-on work, training, and program implementation.
- • Day-to-day responsibilities include providing coaching and mentorship to shelter staff, delivering lifesaving training in person and virtually, supporting sustainable programs like adoptions and pet retention, collecting and maintaining shelter statistics, and representing Best Friends as a mission ambassador in partner facilities.
- • Best Friends Animal Society is a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in shelters, operating with a culture rooted in kindness, compassion, authenticity, and inclusion, where team members are expected to uphold guiding principles through respectful and transparent collaboration.
- • In this role, the specialist will develop expertise in lifesaving shelter practices, strengthen training and presentation skills, gain experience in organizational change within animal welfare settings, and contribute directly to reducing shelter killings while building professional credibility in the field.
🎯 Requirements
- • Experience in animal welfare in a shelter environment is required, preferably for 5+ years.
- • High school diploma or GED required.
- • Must be able to travel regularly up to 50% for shelter presentations and trainings.
- • Must be detail-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication and editing skills.
- • Must have excellent critical thinking, organizational, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills.

- • Hiring range anticipated to be $59,000-$65,000 annually, depending on experience.
