- • As a Sr. Mortgage Underwriter I at Valon VM Inc., you will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity and compliance of residential loan underwriting for conventional and FHA loans, directly contributing to the company’s mission of transforming mortgage servicing and lending through technology-driven innovation. Your expertise will help maintain high standards of accuracy, risk mitigation, and regulatory adherence, enabling Valon to deliver transparent, efficient, and homeowner-centric mortgage experiences at scale.
- • Day-to-day responsibilities include analyzing borrowers’ credit, income, assets, collateral, and repayment capacity to assess creditworthiness; reviewing complex tax returns and income calculations for accuracy; conducting thorough appraisal reviews to validate collateral value; examining loan documentation for completeness and compliance with Fannie Mae/DU, Freddie Mac/LPA, FHA, and investor guidelines; reviewing new loans and clearing conditions on resubmissions within established service level agreements (SLAs); mentoring and training new underwriting hires to uphold team competency and consistency; performing quality control reviews and responding to internal and external audits; maintaining data integrity across all loan files; ensuring KPIs are met as defined by underwriting leadership; multitasking effectively in a high-volume environment while maintaining meticulous attention to detail; and continuously enhancing customer service knowledge to support a seamless borrower experience.

- • In this role, you will deepen your expertise in secondary market underwriting, GSE and government loan programs, and regulatory compliance (including RESPA, TILA, ECOA, TRID, and CFPB rules), while developing leadership and mentoring capabilities through training new team members. You’ll gain exposure to a technology-forward mortgage environment that emphasizes data integrity, process automation, and customer-centric design—positioning you at the forefront of industry evolution. Success in this role can lead to greater influence in underwriting strategy, potential advancement into senior or managerial underwriting functions, and the opportunity to contribute to the expansion of Valon’s lending footprint across new states and loan products.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of conventional mortgage underwriting experience
- • 3+ years of FHA DE underwriting experience (Total Scorecard and Manual)
- • Deep knowledge of Fannie Mae/DU, Freddie Mac/LPA, and FHA guidelines and automated underwriting systems
- • Understanding of relevant mortgage industry federal regulations, including RESPA, TILA, ECOA, TRID, CFPB, and related compliance frameworks
- • Minimum education requirement: High school diploma or GED equivalent
