📋 Description

• As a Staff DevOps Engineer at Artisan, you will be instrumental in building and scaling the foundational infrastructure that powers our revolutionary AI employees. This is a unique opportunity to own the entire DevOps and infrastructure layer for a rapidly growing YC W24 company that is redefining autonomous digital workers. You will not just execute existing practices but will define and set the standards for how Artisan builds, deploys, monitors, and secures its complex, mission-critical systems. Your work will directly impact the reliability, scalability, and security of our platform, enabling our AI BDR, Ava, to perform real jobs autonomously and effectively for hundreds of companies.
• Our platform handles an immense scale, managing hundreds of millions of leads, orchestrating autonomous AI agents in real-time, sending email at massive scale across thousands of customer mailboxes, and serving a product suite that replaces an entire sales stack. The infrastructure you will manage is the backbone of this operation, ensuring seamless performance and unwavering reliability. This is a staff-level role, offering significant autonomy and the chance to make a lasting impact on the company's technical direction and operational excellence.
• You will be the primary owner of our Kubernetes and container orchestration environment on AWS. This includes managing cluster operations, defining and implementing scaling policies, optimizing resource utilization, and ensuring the compute layer effectively serves our demanding AI workloads, complex data pipelines, and customer-facing product infrastructure. Your expertise will be crucial in maintaining a robust and efficient cloud-native architecture.
• With a culture of constant innovation, we ship code multiple times a day. You will be responsible for building, maintaining, and continuously improving our CI/CD and deployment pipelines. This involves implementing automated testing, managing staging environments, establishing robust rollback strategies, and integrating feature flag systems to enable engineers to release new features with confidence and speed.
• Ensuring the observability and reliability of our systems is paramount. You will architect and build our monitoring, alerting, logging, and tracing infrastructure from the ground up. This proactive approach will ensure that any issues, such as an AI agent failing to send an email or a data pipeline stalling, are immediately detected, diagnosed, and resolved, minimizing impact on customer operations.
• A critical and unique aspect of this role involves owning the email deliverability infrastructure. Ava sends emails at scale across thousands of domains and mailboxes, making sender reputation, domain warming, DNS configuration, and IP management essential components of our success. You will develop and maintain the infrastructure that guarantees high deliverability rates and directly impacts customer outcomes.
• Security and compliance are non-negotiable. You will own the security posture across our entire stack, implementing best practices for secrets management, access controls, network policies, and vulnerability scanning. Your efforts will be key in achieving and maintaining SOC 2 readiness, ensuring the protection of sensitive customer data, email credentials, and business-critical workflows.
• Operating at our scale, with intensive AI workloads and data processing, incurs significant cloud costs. You will architect for cost efficiency, implement right-sizing strategies for infrastructure, and build visibility tools to track and understand cloud spend, ensuring financial responsibility.
• Beyond the core infrastructure, you will significantly enhance the developer experience. By providing seamless local development environments, fast and reliable build processes, dependable deployments, and clear documentation, you will empower the entire engineering team to be more productive and focus on innovation rather than infrastructure complexities.
• This role is ideal for a seasoned infrastructure leader who thrives in a fast-paced startup environment and is passionate about building cutting-edge technology. 🎯 Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure engineering, with a proven track record of owning production systems end-to-end.
• Deep expertise with Kubernetes, container orchestration, and cloud-native architecture, specifically on AWS.
• Strong experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines that teams trust and use daily.
• Fluency in infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, Pulumi) and GitOps workflows.
• Solid understanding of networking, DNS, load balancing, and fundamental security principles.
• Experience with monitoring and observability tooling (e.g., Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus).
• Comfortable scripting in Python, Bash, or Go for automation and tooling.
• Experience operating databases in production (e.g., PostgreSQL, Redis).
• Strong opinions on reliability, incident response, and on-call practices, coupled with pragmatism.
• Bonus: Experience with email infrastructure at scale (deliverability, domain/IP management, SMTP).
• Bonus: Experience supporting ML/AI workloads in production.
• Bonus: Startup experience where you built the infrastructure function from scratch.
