Staff Software Engineer

📋 Description

• • We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to own the technical direction of the products we ship.
• • You'll be a senior technical owner on a fast-moving engineering team of around 15 engineers: backend-strong, comfortable working across the stack, and accountable for taking products from design through launch.
• • You'll work closely with product managers, designers, and engineers, and you'll set the bar for how the team builds.
• • We're bringing AI to language learning in a way that strengthens what makes Cambly work: real tutors and real human connection.
• • And we build AI-first: implementation is delegated to AI coding tools so engineers spend their time on the decisions, design, and review that actually shape the product.

• • Our frontend is built on Next.js, React, and TypeScript.
• • Our backend is built with Python (Flask and FastAPI) on AWS with MongoDB.
• • YOU WILL
• • - Own the product platform.
• • - Make the hard calls.
• • - Ship end to end.
• • - Work across the stack.
• • - Set how we build.
• • - Grow the team.
• • WORK ON PROJECTS LIKE
• • - Owning the platform behind a new AI-forward learning experience that generates personalized activities for each learner, and shaping it as we learn what works.
• • - Designing the backend systems and data models that hold up as an AI-forward product grows.
• • - Building post-lesson activities curated to each learner's areas for improvement.
• • ABOUT YOU
• • - 7+ years of engineering experience, with a track record of owning systems and leading them to production.
• • - Deep backend ability: API design, data modeling, and production systems that hold up at scale.
• • - You build AI-first.
• • - You own your work and have the technical judgment to make the calls that come with it.
• • - Comfortable working outside your core.
• • - A product mindset.
• • - A clear communicator who can explain technical trade-offs to engineers and non-engineers alike.

• • COMPENSATION
• • This role is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the expected base salary range for this position is shown below.
• • The actual base pay depends on job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, business needs, and market demand.
• • All full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation and for benefits.
• • $200,000 - $230,000 USD Base Salary plus pre-IPO stock options.
