As a Staff Software Engineer you will sit at the intersection of scale, performance, and developer experience, shaping the architecture that lets marketers publish JavaScript-heavy sites without ever worrying about SEO penalties.
• • Your charter is to amplify every engineer around you. While you will still ship code daily, the real multiplier is the tooling, patterns, and context you leave behind. You will lead multi-team initiatives that modernize our rendering pipeline, reduce infra spend, and cut p99 latency—turning "impossible" performance wins into repeatable defaults.
• • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of large-scale architectural changes. From RFC to phased rollout, you will balance backwards compatibility, data migration, and zero-downtime deploys. Recent examples include sharding our renderer fleet by geography and migrating from Puppeteer clusters to a custom headless engine that cut memory usage by 40 %.
• • Build the guardrails that let product teams move fast without breaking the crawl. You will create opinionated SDKs, golden-path Terraform modules, and self-service dashboards that turn "DevOps" into a one-click experience. When a team needs a new region, they run a single command and are live in minutes.
• • Coach engineers in XP practices applied to real production pressure. Pair program on gnarly refactors, run ensemble sessions to spike on new features, and introduce property-based tests that surface race conditions before they hit staging. Your code reviews are celebrated for teaching, not gatekeeping.
• • Partner with Product and Leadership to balance roadmap urgency with long-term technical health. You will translate business goals ("cut indexing latency by 30 % in Q3") into technical bets, risk matrices, and measurable SLIs that the entire org can reason about.
• • Champion a culture of continuous improvement. Run quarterly architecture guilds, publish internal tech radars, and curate living decision records so that every new engineer understands not just what we built, but why we built it that way.
• • Model sustainable delivery. You will demonstrate that high quality and high velocity are not trade-offs—by shipping small, reversible changes behind feature flags, instrumenting everything, and automating the toil that burns teams out.
• • Influence beyond your keyboard. Whether it’s presenting the next-gen renderer design to the entire company, mentoring senior engineers into staff-level thinking, or representing Prerender at meetups and conferences, your voice will shape the external perception of our technical brand.
• • Work fully remote with teammates across 15 time zones. We default to asynchronous communication—RFCs in Notion, decisions in GitHub, demos in Loom—so deep work is protected and context is never lost.
